Cricut Money Saver - making your mat sticky again + free images

Need to refurbish the mat for your die-cutting machine?   According to my research, there are numerous ways you can save some bucks and re-stick your mat.  I've asked around, did a little online research, and after talking to one local scrapbook store owner, I decided that the route I wanted to take was using Zig 2 way glue.  It seemed like the easiest alternative for me, so here's what you need to do:

    1.  Scrub your mat really well with warm water and dish soap.  I used a scrubber designed for non-stick cookware.  You can find a 3-pk for .99 at Walmart.  It's going to take a little elbow grease to get all the nubby little pieces of glue off your mat, so dig in for about 5-7 minutes.
The results will be well worth it.
Allow your mat to thoroughly dry before proceeding to the next step.

    2.  Using the Broad tipped Zig 2 way glue pen, completely cover your dry mat, running the glue stick up and down.  If you're using a new glue pen, you may need to prime your glue until you see the blue come all the way through to the tip by pressing down continuously on the tip.  This glue goes on blue, and dries clear.  You can find this glue in your local craft store for around $5.99.  Major chains have coupons that you can use via their phone apps or look in your Sunday paper for a discounted coupon.  It's well worth the investment no matter how much you pay, as this glue goes a long, long way and mats can be very costly to replace.

Can you see the blue glue?  I let this dry overnight but you can probably go with a couple hours.

My mat is nice and sticky now.  I worried that I was putting on too much glue.
The true test will be in the cutting.

And......yup.  A little too sticky.  I guess I was a little heavy-handed with the glue.  Plus, I used thin designer paper which was a mistake.  My advice?  Light on the glue and use some good cardstock to break in your new sticky mat.

Once I got all the sticky paper off the mat, and used some good cardstock for the next few cuts, it was all good.  In fact, I accessed the free images this week and cut several full sheets of the free pennants and banners.

Click here to get the free images of the week and scroll down the page for instructions on accessing them in Cricut craftroom or Design Space.  You need to have your Cricut linked to your computer.

And, if you absolutely, do NOT want to go to the trouble of making your mats sticky and would rather buy new, feel free to follow the banner below to purchase new mats.  You can get free shipping right now, no minimum.  Expires 12/31/14.  Use code FREESHIPDEC

    Cricut Thank You Card

I confess.  I've been a Cricut user for, oh, about 5 years or longer?  And, I'm just now getting linked up to my computer.  Well, there was that thing about no internet for 3 years and trying to find a provider that reaches where we are and bundling our service, etc., etc.

I've been experimenting for the last week or so and getting familiar with Cricut Craft Room and Design Space.  Perfect timing, as I need a Thank You card pronto, and Cricut had just what I needed.

I cut the "thanks" wording from the Bonus Feature of my Cricut Sampler cartridge that I had linked.  I wanted it to look proportional for a 6" x "6 card, so I went with approximately 5.50" x 4.25".  I used only the wording and will save the circled frame for another project.  The wording was cut on black and tan striped paper.  Patterned paper can really give that extra little "pop", don't you think?

Next, I cut the scalloped heart shape on Vellum cardstock, using the Basic Shapes that were already installed and downloaded from my Expression.

I always use my Xyron 2.5" sticker maker for intricate wording as it's so much easier
    to apply to my cards.

You can see in the first photo, that I edged my vellum heart with some ink and a blending tool.
Top it off with a sweet ribbon, and all done!

So, now that I'm hooked up....FINALLY...expect to see more Cricut projects in the near future.

Additional supplies:  May Arts Ribbon silk/brown, Colorbox Queue ink, Ranger mini blending tool

We R Memory Keepers Scoreboard/Trimmer Product Review

Today, I'm sharing my thoughts on the We R Memory Keepers Scoreboard/Trimmer.  I received this product at no cost from WRMK and in exchange, I'm going to give you some honest feedback after having given this a test run.

First, this is not a heavy duty trimmer.  It's designed to be portable and fold up for crafting on the go and general use in your daily crafting.  It opens up to a full 12"x12" and has two locking mechanisms on the back to provide stability.

Use this on a level, flat surface for accuracy in your trimming and scoring.

I decided to test out 3 different types of paper, to check the trimmed edges; vellum, medium weight cardstock and heavy cardstock.

The edges of each were perfectly cut and consistent, which I would attribute to the titanium blades.
I couldn't find any flaws in the trimmed edges.   I took the vellum piece and trimmed it into a 4"x4" section which lined up perfectly square.  WRMK provides an extra blade in your kit which, when ready to replace, simply pop the old one out and snap the new blade into place.

Now for the scoring....there's a notch at the bottom of the scoreboard where the scoring tool is stored.  Insert it point forward, for storage, so you can easily grab the handle for removal.   I held the unit upside down to see if the handle would fall out and it didn't, however when I shook it, it did fall out.  I would suggest that you make a point to carry this device upright, to make sure you don't lose your score tool.

If you're a card maker, you really need a scoreboard.  Scoring makes all the difference in the world for having perfect edges.  Folding just doesn't get it, not if you want a professional touch on your cards.  Particularly, if you sell your paper crafts or are thinking about selling.
When using the score board, take your time to score.  I rushed through the first attempt and my tool wobbled a bit and got off center.  Use even pressure, take your time and you will have a nice, perfect score every time.

    Isn't that a beautiful score?

I even made a little gift box, just by experimenting with scoring and measuring.

After fully testing this tool, I can say that I'm extremely pleased.  It's exactly what I was looking for:

a handy, portable, multi-functional tool that I can
carry to crops and use in my craft room.

If you would like further information on this tool, visit this link: http://www.weronthenet.com/Trim_And_Score and view the
1 minute video tutorial with additional instruction on scoring.

Mod Podge and Waffle Flower Pin

My sister always tries to outdo me at Christmas.  So this year, I've come up with a handmade, thoughtful gift, and by golly.....she better like it!

She works for an eye glass company so I thought it would be nice to make her a pin that she could wear to work every day, along with her company uniform.

This is what I came up with:

I wanted it to be in an "eye chart" format with a little play on words.  The lettering is from the Waffle Flower "Be My Guest" font stamp set.  I stamped it onto a piece of DCWV Vintage Essentials tissue paper with black Ranger ink, then Mod Podged it onto a piece of Mod Podge Shapeables.  Those are Basic Grey Candy Buttons glued on with Tombow Mono Aqua Glue.
Got to make sure they stay put!

For the backing, I used Mod Podge on a piece of white cardstock; the tissue paper is so thin, you could see through, so it needed a white background.  This pin base comes all ready sticky, but I'm not taking any chances on it coming off, so I added an extra strip of Tombow Xtreme adhesive to secure it.  It's heavy duty stuff!

I think my sister will get a kick out of this cute pin.  What do you think?

I'm entering this into the December Waffle Flower Challenge, Anything Goes.  Join in yourself and play along here:  http://waffleflower.com/2014/12/another-thank-you-winners-a-new-anything-goes-challenge/

    Glitter binds us together!

I love the girls over at Mountain Plains Crafters.  They are fun, loving, generous, supportive....I really could go on all day.I'm not sure who came up with the idea, but it was unanimous that we all make a glitter card in honor of our crafty sisters, because glitter is stronger than blood!

I'll give you some quick details on mine. One of the girls sent me the pretty trim from Webster's Pages.  It reminds me of icicles.  I layered it over some pink chevron designer paper from ADORNit, then glittered up a single white rosette (or as I like to say, a big giant glittery snowball!) from May Arts Ribbon using Tombow mono aqua glue and Doodlebug Designs Sugar Coating Lily White glitter.  It's so pretty, I didn't want to clutter it with a sentiment.  What do you think?

Additional Supplies: Tombow Xtreme adhesive runner, The Paper Studio 4x6 white card

It's been a big, big, big, big day

Today, my one and only turned 13.  As I'm picking out a cake from the store, 90 minutes before party time (because I neglected to be on top of things) I also remembered that I failed to make a card.
Me.  A cardmaker.  One who makes cards, failed to commemorate this big day with a special card for a very special guy.

To put the literal icing on the cake?  I ran out of adhesive a couple days ago.  Not only did I run out of my favorite adhesive but I also ran out of the backup adhesive, and the backup to the backup while working on my last project.

I rush home and with 10 minutes to spare before party departure, I made this card.

A little washi tape to hold the base down, some pop dots and glue dots.....whew!  The stress was totally worth it when my son opened his card, asked me if I made it, then rewarded me with a great big smile when I said yes.

Thank you, to everyone, who had a hand in making this day so special for my son.

Supplies: Unity Stamp Co Birthday Jubilee sentiment, Pretty Little Studio ice cream cone die cut, Pinkfresh Studio cloth pocket and wood arrows, Tim Holtz brushed corduroy distress ink, DCWV Vintage Essentials tissue paper (embossed), Darice musical note embossing folder, Queen & Co polka dot washi tape, Glue Dots mini dots, Pop dots

    FROZEN face painting

We had an event at church last night, to assist some needy families in the area, with Christmas.  At the last minute, I decided to bring my DecoArt People Paint pens and do a little face painting.
When I say last minute, I mean last minute.  The pens were still packaged and had never been primed.
This would be my first run with these markers.

I started with ornament balls and snowflakes.  Then, a little girl wanted Elsa.  Uh, oh.  No yellow for those golden locks, so we compromised with Olaf.  Olaf was definitely a work in progress.  My skills on wiggling, impatient children were lacking, but overall, the kids thought Olaf was awesome.  And that's what really matters, isn't it?

Sizzix Mug of Cocoa Treat Boxes

My son turns 13 this week.   Of course, I've gone and let time slip away and I am not prepared for a party.  So, I thought I'd take these new Sizzix dies for a spin (Mug and Spoon and Scoreboard XL Make-it-3-D Box) and make some "Cocoa to go" treat boxes to pass out at the party as parting gifts.

I even went so far as to emboss silver spoons.  With snowflakes.  And made tiny little hand-tied bows.  I'm so proud of my handiwork.

I showed them to my son and was quickly informed that boys don't care about frilly stuff.  Oopsy.  Guess I'll have some happy co-workers instead.

(These are filled with a Swiss Miss cocoa packet, Kraft Jet-puffed Peppermint marshmallows and a Hershey's Chocolate Peppermint candy cane.  What is wrong with that boy?!)

5 minute easy, quick gift tags with Xyron

As I was wrapping presents tonight, I realized I was out of gift tags.  What to do?  Well as any good crafter does, we run to our stash and figure something out.  In this case, I grabbed some scrap Christmas paper I had on hand, my 2" circle punch,
some ink, stamps and my Xyron 2.5" sticker machine.

I had these $1.00 Christmas stamps that I picked up from Michael's hobby store last year.  I stamped the circles in black ink and white ink (for the black cardstock) before running through my Xyron.

After running the stamped circles through the machine, I added some sticker bling from my stash.  Some Jolees Boutique candy canes and some Hallmark peelies that I've had awhile.  All done, in about 5 minutes.  Easy, quick and cute!  Just stick them on the presents!

Additional supplies: Ranger black ink, white gel pen, scrap cardstock from K & Company,
Martha Stewart and The Paper Studio, Recollections white pigment ink

    Winter Greetings

Happy Friday!  I have a sweet friend here, Mr. Owl, and he is just hanging out on a branch and chillin' in the cold.  I'm entering him in a couple challenges today.

    and

I made an ombre effect using a watercolor technique with Tim Holtz Tumbled Glass distress ink, then added glittery snowflakes using Tombow mono aqua glue and sprinkled glitter.  The sentiment is from the Unity October 2013 kit of the month called Oh Christmas Tree and was partial heat embossed with embossing powder.  The Owl is also from Unity and called Wonderful Owl.  He was watercolored with Tim Holtz distress inks in Brushed Corduroy and the Gathered Twigs distress marker.  The branch is a We R Memory Keepers stamp from a mini set called Yuletide and it was stamped twice and watercolored as well.

Enjoy your weekend and Merry Christmas!

Additional supplies: Ranger glossy accents, white gel pen

Old Fashioned Ribbon candy Mason Jar shaker card

I'm so happy to have been chosen to participate in the Christmas Card Craft Challenge from May Arts Ribbon.    My idea was to make old fashioned Christmas ribbon candy out of the ribbons, supplied by May Arts, for this project.  I chose to present this in the form of a Mason Jar shaker card.  Sweet!  Be sure and head over to the May Arts Ribbon blog Here and vote for your favorite.  Mine is the last entry.  Just leave a comment to vote.  Even if mine isn't your favorite, go look and vote anyway.  There will be prizes given out to those who vote, as well as to the winners.  Nice, huh?

I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to make the ribbon candy.  I didn't do any research to see if this had been done before.  I'm kind of stubborn that way, haha.  So, after several failed attempts,  I finally figured out that I really needed some wire to help make this bendable and maintain its form.  Luckily, I had some old green wire ties in my stash that I've had forever.   We crafters hold on to everything, don't we?    I glued the wires to my ribbon with Tombow Xtreme adhesive runner, then added a few thin strips of American Crafts glitter adhesive tape.

Next, I made a panel card with a lovely piece of Christmas designer paper from K & Company, and added a border strip that would be wide enough to allow room for my candy ribbons and sequins.  I used some Thermoweb glue lines for this, so when shaking, the sequins wouldn't escape. I cut out a shape that was a tad smaller than the jar die itself.

I made the Mason Jar using the Sizzix (pictured/linked below) die and coordinating embossing folder.  I discovered I can use Sizzix Bigz dies with my Cuttlebug, found at pinkcricut.com that shows different combinations for mixing and matching dies and embossing folders with other die cutting machines.  Here's the direct link:  Sarah Hamer Designs (printable cheatsheet).  I also used the die to cut some acrylic sheets for my shaker.  Do you save empty acrylic bags?  I do.  Use them for shaker cards!  The acrylic cover was also glued with Tombow Xtreme, to the backside of my mason jar die cut.  It's much easier to apply the glue to the cardstock, than the acrylic sheeting.  Bonus tip!

I inked my jar up slightly with Tim Holtz Brushed Corduroy distress ink and Memento London Fog for the lid.  Then I added some Mod Podge magic dimensional glue and Glossy Accents for shine.  The pictures do not do this justice!

I also made peppermint swirls for my candy jar.  In this case, I had some May Arts Ribbon red 2 mm bakers twine that I formed on large Elmer's glue dots.  Aren't they cute?  And so easy to make.  Lastly, the sentiment is from the Unity Stamps October 2013 Kit of the Month called, "Oh Christmas Tree"; one of my favorite stamp kits.

It took me a good 1/2 a day to figure all this out but now that I know what I'm doing....next time will go much quicker.  I hope I've inspired you to give this a try.  Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Other Supplies: dark green heavy cardstock, Cricut scoring tool, Star cut from Martha Stewart Christmas paper, Wink of Stella glitter brush in Clear (over sentiment), Tim Holtz distress marker, Pretty Pink Posh clear and Christmas mix sequins
