My Grandparents - A Love Story (and layout)

(*Update - scroll down) I confess.  I'm a procrastinator.  I admit it, and I embrace it.   With that being said, I'm flying in by the seat of my pants (again) to celebrate my pal Monica's birthday.  She's having a big birthday bash and it was the perfect time for me to create this layout that I've been meaning to do.

I received this photo a few months ago from my cousin.  These are my grandparents when they were just starting out on their journey in life.  Their's was a grand love story.  Their love for one another was evident, unabashed and eternal.  Even in old age, when both were separated by health issues and finally death, their love for one another never wavered.  I wondered how my grandmother would ever survive the death of her beloved, but survive she did.  She was a strong woman and I loved them both dearly.

Her many grandchildren remember her garden and some have grown today, tending gardens of their own.  She grew sunflowers, peas, and eggs (from the chicken coop!).

As much as she loved to garden, she loved my grandfather more, as did he.  They had such respect for one another and it's a shame that you don't see much of that in this day and age.  I love the movie, "Nottinghill" and drew inspiration for the "garden" reference above.  Remember the scene in the movie where Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are reading the memorial plaque on the park bench?  I get all weepy just thinking about it!

To create my 8.5" x 11" scrapbook page, I used lots of Graphic 45 papers including Communique, A Proper Gentleman, A Time to Flourish August (sunflowers), G45 Typography washi tape and die cuts.  All my adhesives and foam squares are from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

I also used my Tombow calligraphy pen to letter my grandparent's names, and a white gel pen to letter the sentiment below.

I miss them so much.  I'm so proud of the legacy they left to our family.....the family values..... the love.  I know my cousins and other extended family feel the same way.   So, I pay tribute to them today and leave a little piece of them to pass on to my own son.  One day, he'll share these stories with his own children and that brings me joy.

*Update!  Since posting this project,  I learned from my cousins that yes,  my grandfather had just begun courting my grandmother.   My cousin Kimberly,  sent me these photos below which was my grandfather's calling card and included his own hand designed initials.

In addition,  that is my grandfathers first car in the photo above.   I'm thrilled to discover these additional tidbits.

P. S.... Happy National Cousins Day,  to the best cousins on the planet!

Now, since I procrastinated (sigh), you don't have much time to join the party, if you'd like to link up to Monica's birthday bash.  Here's the link though.

You have until 5/31/17 to link up your creation.  There's a mood board too, to get your mojo going!

Thanks for stopping in and listening to me share a piece of my heart with you!  Terri

Stenciled Rainbow Card for So Suzy Stamps

I'm featuring this pretty rainbow card today, for So Suzy Stamps and showcasing several techniques; stenciling, watercoloring and heat embossing.  I made this while at a craft retreat on National Scrapbook Day recently, and actually, gave this to my mom for Mother's Day.  It's very easy to re-create with some key ingredients, so scroll down for more.  I'm using the Simple Love You stamp and  the Swirly Hearts stamp for this A2 sized card.

In addition to the stamps mentioned, you will need:

-watercolor paper (Strathmore) and/or mixed media paper
- water mister
-patterned paper
-black cardstock
-solid cardstock (color of choice)
-water based markers (Marvy)
-stencil (DCWV chevron)
-paper towel
-Versamark clear watermark ink
-black embossing powder (Nuvo)
-white cardstock
-large circle die, scalloped dies and die cutter
-embellishments, doily
-adhesive (Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L)
-white gel pen
-heat embossing tool
-Misti stamping tool
-optional * glitter glue

1. Heat emboss your sentiment by stamping your sentiment first with Versamark clear ink, sprinkling Nuvo black embossing powder over stamped ink, then tapping off excess.    Pour excess back into  bottle.  Melt the powder with your heat emboss tool.  I love heat embossing because it offers such nice, raised dimension on your card.  I'm also using my Misti stamping tool which allows mistake proof stamping and fuller ink coverage.

2.  I grabbed several water based markers  I love many brands, however I'm using the Marvy Le Plume II markers today.  Use what ever colors you like.  Using your Misti, position your heart stamp so that it will impress directly over the "Love" sentiment.  Grab the heart stamp with the lid of your Misti and carefully swipe the different colors across your heart.  I'm using the center heart only, from the Swirly Hearts stamp.  Lightly spritz with water.  I blotted any excess water that was on the outer edge of my heart, then stamped the watered ink over my sentiment.  Dry with heat tool and trim with fine tipped scissors, around the outline of your inked heart, and set aside.

3.   Next, trim a 4"x 4" piece of watercolor paper and grab a stencil of your choosing.  I'm using a DCWV chevron design that I trimmed from a larger 12" x 12" stencil.  Tape down stencil over watercolor paper or press and hold tightly, directly coloring each line with a different color.  When finished, spritz with a water mister, letting colors run a bit, then blot with a paper towel.  Dry with your heat emboss tool.  Using the largest stitched circle die (LaLa Land Crafts) and your die cutting machine (Cuttlebug), cut out a circle from the stenciled image and set aside.

4.  Using the two largest scalloped dies from your favorite nesting dies (Elizabeth Craft Design) that fit an A2 sized card, trim papers and layer as desired.   Adhere your watercolored heart to a larger square piece of black cardstock.  Outline white dots with a white gelly roll pen and trim the outline with scissors.  Adhere stenciled circle and decorative heart to your card.

5.  I felt like it needed a little bling, so one of my housemates at the craft retreat suggested to decorate one stenciled line with Stickles glitter glue (Diamond).  Great idea!

Thank you so much for stopping by today!  Terri

Blooming with So Suzy Stamps

Wow, can you believe it's May 1st?  Where has the time gone?  One more month and my one and only will end his freshman year in high school.  Sigh.  I'll admit, I have been having crafty mojo issues.  After tossing three projects where I just wasn't feeling it, I finally decided to stick with just three colors for this card featuring So Suzy Stamps.   I pulled out an old favorite, "Fancy Butterfly", along with the new Olesya Bloom, Open Leaves and Simple Be You.  Be sure and stop by Suzy's blog today, as the entire design team is bringing you inspiration with the latest release, several of which are designed by our very own Olesya Kharkova.

I created my card, first, scaling down a 5" x 7" white Bazzill Card, and trimming a piece of woodgrain DCWV cardstock from my Vintage Collector papers, then running it through a WRMK woodgrain emboss folder with my Cuttlebug.

Next, I used my Spellbinders Celebration Rectangle pierced dies, cutting a blue and orange piece of DCWV Flip Cardstock paper, stacking them together and trimming them diagonally so I can use just one half of each color and piece them together.

To keep it simple, I chose just 3 colors; brown, orange and blue.  I was feeling the hippie and 70's vibe so I went with it.  I heat embossed all my images using Nuvo Hot Chocolate embossing powder.  Gosh, I love that color so much.  It's my absolute favorite right now.  You can find it here, in Suzy's store.
Next, I colored my embossed images with my Marvy Lettering Markers, blending with a waterbrush and blotting with a paper towel for a light effect.  Aren't they breathtaking?  I think so.

If you look up close on the floral centers, you'll see that they're popped up on foam.  I used a hole punch to pop them up.  All my adhesives are from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.  I also shaped my flowers, not with a fancy shaping tool, but by folding the petals inward and using the tip of a sharpie marker, pressing along the inside of each petal, with a thick foam mat which allowed me to better mold and shape my flowers.  It helps to first lightly spritz the back of your paper flower with water.  After shaping is complete, dry with a heat emboss tool.

I also bought this pendant jewelry piece on clearance quite some time ago from Hobby Lobby.  I remembered that I had it and thought it would go perfectly with my color theme.  I hot glued it to the center of my handmade bow.  I'm so happy with how my card turned out.  These colors truly put me in a good mood!

Thanks so much for stopping in today.  Be sure and visit the blog for more design team inspiration today.
