Butterfly and Hexagon Slimline Card

Hello friends. I'm back today with another project featuring the new Hops and Peeps stamp set from Catherine Pooler Designs. I also have some hexagon dies from Creative Expressions that I incorporated into this project as a pop up element. Scroll down for some creative details! First, let me tell you about the hexagon dies. They're part of the Canvas Collection from Creative Expressions and are one of the new and hot products of 2022! I did some ink smooshing with my hexagon die cuts, using the Catherine Pooler Inks in the photo below. I sometimes use mixed media paper for my ink smooshing and I used Canson which you can find locally at Walmart. The great thing about these hexagon dies is you can use them as a pop up feature and fold like a box. However, there are nesting hexagon dies included in the set that can cut the center for making shaker elements. 

The tabbed die is super easy to fold as well. I used some small glue dots from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L to adhere my tab corners.

For my slimline card base I used Neenah cardstock and I also trimmed a top layer of cardstock and embossed with a Cuttlebug 6x8 embossing folder in a filigree design. I've had it awhile and I don't believe Cricut sells them anymore but this folder from Creative Expressions is very close to what I used.

My butterflies are from the Catherine Pooler Hops and Peeps stamp set and guess what? Yup, another featured new and hot product for 2022 from Scrapbookcom! My butterflies were stamped on Canson mixed media and watercolored using the same 3 Catherine Pooler Inks that I used for my hexagon boxes. I have some retired gemstones from Nuvo that are hot glued to the center of my butterflies and strips of paper from Catherine Pooler's new Happy Mama paper pack add more color and interest to my card. My butterflies are popped up on a foam circles, but I needed 3 stacked foam circles for each hexagon box to pop it enough so it didn't sink in the center.

 

I'm a big believer in using what you have and that included the sentiment. It's from a retired Hello Bluebird stamp set that was gifted to me. I wanted a one-liner sentence and since I didn't have any newer sentiment stamps that fit the bill, I pulled out this set. I love it and happiness is timeless!

Nested Owls and Planner Pages with Adornit + Free Design Space Cut File

As promised, if you saw a little snippet of my decorative planner borders last week, here's the final result.  This is my September spread for my Adornit coloring planner that features those cute little scalloped edge borders.  Stay with me for just a few minutes and I'll share how to make those in multiple stacks as a time saver, which, if you're like me, time is a precious commodity!

In addition to these fun papers, I'm also using Adornit stickers and planner stamps as well.  I used my gel pen to color my sticker which is from the Month Titles Clear stickers collection and I'm using the "Dated" and "Noted" Planner stamps from the Documented Faith collection.  They are currently not in stock at Adornit, however you can find them at Scrapbook.com.

Earlier this year, I designed a 1.5" square with rounded corners to decorate my planner squares.  You can find the free cut file by clicking the link at the end of this post.  It's designed for Cricut Explore users and the design space program but you could substitute with a 1.5" square punch and corner rounder punch.

Now, with all this chit chat, let me get on with these cute little borders.  If you have a die cutting machine such as a Cuttlebug, Big Shot, etc., and a scalloped die, you can do this.

After cutting (or punching) my rounded squares, I placed them in 3 layer stacks on my cutting plate, then placed my die face down  so there's a scalloped edge from my die on both stacks.  Layering this with 3 tiered squares also speeds up the cutting process so instead of just one square being cut at a time, I have 6!  Be sure and run this through your machine a couple times to make sure you get a good cut.  I tried four layers but the paper was just a tad too thick to allow four in one cut.  As an added bonus, not only do you have the cute scalloped border edge, but you also have the remaining cut which was like a wave border.  I placed some of those in my planner as well. 

Use the borders on the top or bottom of your daily planner squares for that eye pleasing pop!

Making Time to Color With the Adornit Coloring Planner #ad

Finding time to color has been difficult recently.  I love to color, but my super busy life has made little time for it.  So, I decided to bring a few supplies to work and squeeze in some coloring on my breaks and my lunch time.   I've also got some affiliate shopping links below because right now, through May 15th, you can get 20%-30% off planners and planner supplies!  The discount will show on the product page.  Sweet!

I'm coloring the May dashboard for my Adornit coloring planner.  It's got an amazing bee hive and I decided I would keep it low key with just 3 colors, starting with my Ranger Fossilized Amber distress ink.  That was my focal color.  I colored my flowers with it as well.  I threw in a couple of Tombow dual brush markers and watercolored by swiping on an acrylic block and picking up the color with my Tim Holtz water brush pen.

So how long did this take?  Less than one hour.  I can't tell you how fun it was to squeeze in some time even on a busy work day, and end up having a little relaxation and fun.  It's so worthwhile.  Plan the night before and toss your supplies into a tote bag.  The next day, grab 'em and go!

Since we're talking about coloring and planners, I thought I'd show you a peek at my May Calendar.  This was just the start but I wanted you to see how fun it is to take scrapbook paper and use it as a base for those planner squares.  I designed a cut file to make it super easy, using my Cricut Explore and designing a rounded corner 1.5" square.   I'm also using Adornit scrapbook paper on my May spread, featuring the Bumble papers and Adornit blender papers which has lots of fun designs, including the chevron pictured below. You can get single sheets of blender paper at Scrapbook.com or purchase the entire pack directly from adornit.com.  I love that the planner pages are blank so you can customize your own dates, too.

To make the adhesive process quick, I like to run my squares through my Xyron Creative Station but a smaller sticker maker works too, or you can simply use an adhesive tape runner.

Let's Talk About Planners.... and Planner Accessories!

Here are a couple of the stamp sets I bought, also from the Documented Faith line.  I really like that these are generic for any type project though and will go great with so many of my craft projects.  I highly recommend that you at least add the "Noted" and Dated" stamp sets as basics for your planner.
