Treat Bag Toppers for Catherine Pooler

Hello lovelies. How do you curl up in the cold weather months? Is it with a good book or a nice hot cup of coffee and a treat? Or maybe it's movie night by the fire. That is the question we're asking here at Catherine Pooler, who is coming out with a fabulous new release on October 15th called Curl Up With Winter. I'm creating with the Personalize This 3x4 stamp set that will be free with any order over $50.  I'm also using the Right at Home Patterned Paper Pack for today's project.

Banana bread is always a hit at our house, but I typically only make it during the Fall and Winter season. It smells up the house so good and is just one of those comforting treats that you just can't resist.

Fun fact, I'm a huge coffee and loose leaf tea lover. I had ordered some Banana Bread Coffee Pu Ehr Tea from one of my favorite tea companies and it arrived the very same day I sat down to create today's project. It was meant to be! I promptly brewed up a cup to enjoy with a slice of banana bread.

Both were delish!

I planned on making some bag toppers with the Right At Home patterned paper and had picked up some glassine bags at a local craft/hobby shop. They measure 7 x 4.50 inches.

I began by trimming some of the patterned papers to these dimensions:

4 1/2 x 2 inches, trimming the ends at an angle

I also made some embellishments to go with my labels, using burlap string from my stash and sequins from the CPD Kings Canyon sequin mix.

In addition, I wrapped burlap string several times width-wise around my trimmed paper, using tape on the backside to secure it in place.

To stamp all my images, I used the Cargo ink, then watercolored my images. To watercolor, I pressed my ink onto a craft mat, spritzed with a touch of water, then painted with my water brush. Here's the breakdown of the colors I used to watercolor:

Skylight, Amber (Pie Plate)

Cargo, Skylight (Hearts)

Clay Mask, Wintergreen, Eucalyptus (Flower)

Before assembling all my embellishments onto my trimmed cardstock, I needed to secure the bag. 

I folded the bag over by about 1 inch, then placed my trimmed paper on top, stapling right in the center where my label will go. That's it, just one staple. If you prefer, you can use an adhesive runner, however, I wanted to make it somewhat easy to open, as I plan on giving these to my neighbor.

Then I assembled all my elements, adhering my hearts and flower flat and my label popped up with adhesive foam.

This was so quick and easy to make these bag toppers. If you can't find glassine bags, most Walmart's carry the clear bags in the Wilton baking section, which is a great alternative.

Baking Cookies with Kaisercraft Bon Appetit

I've been saying for awhile that I wanted to make a layout of this photo.  Originally, I had it sitting in a glass frame on my mantle.  Out of the blue, it fell one day, crashing to the floor, glass shattered everywhere, and that was the impetus to remove the photo from the frame and make a sweet layout.  Today's project comes to you, courtesy of Kaisercraft Bon Appetit!

If you've never heard the history behind the Kaisercraft company, it's an amazing story, one that I heard first hand from a couple staff members who flew all the way from Australia to the Craft and Hobby Association Paper Arts trade show in Atlanta, GA in 2014.  

I purchased the Kaisercraft Bon Appetit collection last year with the intention of making this layout sooner, however, I'm an admitted procrastinator.  In fact, my son is a teenager now, and he frequently chastises me for letting his life in pictures go unnoticed.   This should satisfy his craving.

My son is an excellent chef.  He has been a foodie since birth.  His first word at the age of one, was "calamari".  Ok, maybe not but seriously, he loves to cook and eat.  In fact, he is so driven to pursue a gourmet cooking career, that he has the next 3 years of high school mapped out to take culinary classes at the nearby University career tech center.  This boy is determined to go to culinary school!

I really, really love this collection so I'm sharing my affiliate links, if like me, you must have it.  The papers are simply scrumptious.  They're double sided and very sturdy,  and I love the ephemera and recipe cards that are double sided as well.  In fact, the "happiness" quote is a recipe card, on the flipside.  So, you can use it as an actual recipe card, or have it as focus on your layout.  The only thing that I added to this layout that was not included in my purchase is the deep red, embossed cardstock frame around my photo and the ribbon.

Rudolph's Blizzard Mix: Christmas baking with kids

I am so excited to be participating in this fun, creative event with Laura Kelly Designs.  Spending quality time with our kids should be the most important part of each and every day.  I'm thankful that my son loves, and I do mean, LOVES to cook.  He can whip up a mean batch of sweet and sour chicken, bake cookies....you name it.  He's almost 13 and it didn't take any convincing to join me in the kitchen to bake my own recipe, aptly named Rudolph's Blizzard Mix.  It's a fun holiday snack mix that the kids (and adults) will love making and, most importantly, eating!

Recipe:

1 box Crispix cereal (12 oz)

2 cups stick pretzels (Rold Gold)

1 stick butter (1/2 cup)

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 tsp. McCormick pure vanilla extract

1 cup red M&M candies (separated from red/green)

1 cup White chocolate mint M&M candies

1 to 2 cups mini Kraft jet puffed marshmallows

1/2 cup Domino confectioner sugar

 *optional - 1 bar of BAKER'S premium baking white chocolate

                     3/4 tsp of McCormick pure Peppermint extract

1.  Let the child separate the red candies.  Always a fun job.  Give them permission to munch on the green ones.  Or save for your candy dish when guests come over.

2.  Melt your butter and brown sugar over medium heat until sugar is dissolved.  Add vanilla extract and stir.  While it's melting, gently mix pretzels and cereal in large bowl, being careful not to crush cereal.  Pour melted mixture over cereal mix and fold in, coating well.  Spray or butter large baking pan and add mixture.  Bake for 30 minutes at 325 degrees, stirring after 15 minutes.  Spread on foil or parchment paper and cool.

3.  Melt baking bar in microwave oven or with double boiler on stove.  Add peppermint extract and stir briskly.  Drizzle over cooled snack mix.  We realized the heat vent in our kitchen was blowing warm air directly over our mix and the white chocolate wasn't hardening.  If your kitchen is too warm, just throw it all in the freezer for a few minutes.

4.  Break up your clumps of mix (if you opted to add the melted white chocolate) and place in large bowl.  Add candies and marshmallows, and stir gently.  

5.  Now for the blizzard!  You can sift your powdered sugar over the mix in your large bowl and/or, you can add an extra dusting just before serving.  The kids will have a blast adding the blizzard to Rudolph's mix.  Enjoy!
