Pink Ribbon Card for Pajama Crafter Stamps

 It's October and that means you'll see pink ribbons everywhere for breast cancer awareness. Today's card features the new Awareness stamp set from Pajama Crafter Stamps and I absolutely had to have this in my collection. As someone who began their breast cancer journey this year, the pink ribbon means so much to me, now more than ever.

If you haven't followed my journey, my mother and sister were both breast cancer survivors. My mom's was caught early and she avoided chemo and radiation, same as me. My sister however, ignored a growing lump for many years and she is very lucky to be alive. She is now over 10 years cancer free but it wasn't without a long, strenuous and painful journey of chemo and radiation.

That is why it's so important to get yearly mammograms and don't ignore symptoms!

I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in May and had a mastectomy in July. Although it was early stages, my doctor did not recommend a lumpectomy due to my family history. I'm doing very well at this time!

So let's get on with a few creative details. I started by stamping my image with Inkon3 Fadeout Ink, then used OLO Markers in 3 colors to color in the negative space.

My stamping was done using my Misti stamp positioner with the cardstock left in place to color. The reason why, is in the next step.

Once I finished my coloring, with my image still in place on the Misti, I stamped my image again using Catherine Pooler Cotton Candy ink, sprinkled on some clear embossing powder, then heat set my image.

I had seen this technique done before, so I thought I'd try it. The reasoning behind it is to avoid muddling up your alcohol marker brush tips with embossing powder that can seep onto your brush tips.

To pop up my butterfly wings, I trimmed along the ribbon line where the wings connect, so I could adhere adhesive foam strips on the backside and have my wings elevated above the ribbon. I also used a paintbrush to slightly curl my wings.

Lastly, I added white paint splatters to my wings, covering up the pink ribbon with low tack tape during this process. I also splattered some ink splatters on my background using Catherine Pooler Do-Si-Doh ink.

My sentiment was stamped in Catherine Pooler Midnight Ink.

If you look closely at the photo above, you might see some of the itty bitty pink sprinkles I harvested from the Pajama Crafter Stamps ROYGBIV Sprinkles Embellishment Mix and glued to my card. Tiny little sequins are some of my faves. So subtle and yet sparkly and shiny.

Guest Designer for Adornit and Coffee Loving Cardmakers Blog Hop

Hello my fellow coffee loving friends!  I'm guest designing for Adornit and the  Coffee Loving Cardmakers Fall Blog Hop.  Adornit is not only a lovely sponsor of the hop this time, but they are also about to release an entire host of new products, including an addition to their line of Art Play Paintables called, "Coffee Talk". 

Adornit has once again partnered with artist Lindsay Ostrom to design this line of Art Play.  Lindsay is truly gifted in lettering and doodling and I love her designs so much.  I fell in love with this image which obviously is paying homage to one of my favorite coffee hangouts. 

I used my Tombow dual brush markers, as my coloring medium, by swiping on an acrylic block and grabbing the color with my water brush.  Don't have an Adornit waterbrush?  Get yours, here.  Such a simple technique that always yields fantastic results.  You can also used your diluted ink to tap droplets all over your project.  Gel pens are another tool that I frequently use for added embellishment on my projects to make wording, flowers, or my background stand out.  Of course, this is a Fall themed blog hop so I've added some leaf buttons from Buttons Galore and embellished with twine and burlap string.

For this next image, I wanted to play around with orange and brown colors as those are typical Fall colors.   I'm once again using the same watercolor technique, however this time I'm using my Zig Clean Color markers, along with gel pens.  I've added some fun Fall embellishments and splattered a doily with orange misting spray.  The easiest way to splatter is to unscrew your misting bottle and just tap droplets onto your project.

Don't be afraid to play around with the letters.  Grab a white gel pen and add little dots or stripes.  I love that Lindsay added some white space when she designed her wording, so I can color it in to my liking.

 My final project has absolutely nothing to do with Fall.  Well, it does in a way, just not your typical Fall card.   I have to say, this is my absolute favorite image out of all 12 images that are included in the Coffee Talk line. 

Why?  It's perfect for so many occasions; get well, thinking of you,  or just because.   October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it is a cause that is near and dear to my heart.  My mom and sister have both battled this disease (successfully!) and this image really spoke to me.  I wanted to make a BCA card that might inspire you to do the same. 

When Lindsay was coming up with ideas for the Coffee Talk line, I happily suggested this quote and I am absolutely tickled pink that it made the cut!   This is just one "out of the box" idea for using this image.  It's super versatile, which is what I love about it.

Watercolor and Stenciled Encouragement Card

I have a friend currently going through chemotherapy and battling a disease that I'm all too familiar with, one that my mother and sister both fought.  I wanted to send her an encouraging card so when Stamplorations came out with their new stamp set, "Butterflies and Buttercups", I knew it would be perfect for my friend.

I also wanted to enter it into a few challenges, so for the technical aspect, this card was stenciled with the Stamplorations "Just Squares" stencil.  To achieve this affect, I taped my stencil down across my card, then took my distress markers and swiped them on an acrylic block.  I used my waterbrush to transfer the colors onto my stencil to achieve a watercolored apperarance.  I varied the colors and shading with less or more water, and also used some DecoArt Americana Multi-surface white paint for splatters and splotches.

My flowers and sentiment were heat embossed and I colored my flowers with the same watercolor technique.  My background papers are from Crate Paper and Maggie Holmes and I really didn't want to cover up any of the wording with additional layers, as it was so appropriate for this card.  Sequins and ribbon/twine embellishments round out this beauty, along with gold Stickles glitter glue in the center of my flowers.

October breast cancer awareness & my family

I thought I would share the impact that breast cancer has had on my family since October is the month of awareness.

My Mother was diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago.   She was the first woman in our family to be diagnosed so we were really shocked.   Thank God,  hers was self contained in one area.   She had a mastectomy one week after diagnosis.   Mom did not want to wait.   The good news is,  she didn't have to have chemo or radiation and has done great ever since.

My younger sister survived breast cancer after a year long battle last year.   Her story was much different.   She had a lump that she ignored.   She hadn't had a mammogram in many,  many years.   She noticed the lump getting bigger and finally,  after much urging,  she finally went to the doctor and got a mammogram.   Because there was movement of the lump and it wasn't stationary,  the doctor didn't think we had cause for concern but a biopsy was done.

To our shock it was an aggressive form and my little sister had a mastectomy and chemo and radiation.   It was a tough year but she came up fighting and as I like to say,  waving her fists in the air Rocky style!   Yesterday,  she found out the results of her BRCA genetic test.   It was negative which was wonderful news.   I'll admit I've thought about my odds with my Mom and sisters diagnosis and definitely feel a sense of relief at this good news.

Ladies,  check yourself regularly.   Don't ignore symptoms.   Don't believe that because your symptoms are not the usual suspect,  that you have nothing to worry about. 

Lastly,  if you are concerned you may have a lump and are uninsured and that is preventing you from pursuing getting checked out,  there are often options.   Check with your local public health department to see if you qualify for any type of Medicaid waiver.   Check with local hospitals and local breast cancer awareness groups and find out if you can get a free mammogram.   Our local group,  Steel Magnolias gave us a ton of helpful information and even delivered my sister a tote bag full of goodies including handmade items and things to help her on this journey.

PINK tag - cancer doesn't know who it's dealing with

This is day 1 of a tag making challenge at the Unity Stamp Co.   I've used the crinkle paper technique.  Simply crinkle up some paper (I used leftover gift wrap),  dip in ink and blot the tag.   Continue until you get your desired effect.  The ''angry'' eyes are from a different stamp set but the cancer sentiment is from Unity.  Love them.  They are awesome!
