Mixed Media Cards for Sizzix and Scrapbook.com

I'm so happy that Scrapbook.com invited me to help them celebrate the new Sizzix release today with a brand new Sizzix designer; Stacey Parks. Scrapbook.com kindly sent me some of these new goodies and I'll be sharing more in the coming days. However, today I'm focusing on one of the layered stencils and one of the acrylic stamp sets in this release, and playing with the new mixed media papers from Scrapbook.com. I also used a color wheel app to determine the colors I'll be using today. Scroll down for all the details! You'll also find my clickable affiliate supply list at the end of this post. One of my favorite free apps is the Color Gear Lite color wheel. I decided I wanted to use 4 colors on my project (not including black), so I selected the RYB (red,yellow,blue) model and landed my cursor on one of the colors. It then selected coordinating colors to go with it. Below is a screenshot from my app.

The stamp set I'm creating with today is the Sizzix Cosmopolitan - Inspire set. These are rather large images, with the floral image measuring 7.9 x 4.9 inches. They're ideal for scrapbookers and cardmakers alike. If you use a stamp platform, you will need a large one. I used my larger original Misti stamp positioner and my Scrapbookcom hybrid black ink on the white mixed media paper, then trimmed it to an A2 card panel size. I had the 6x8 inch mixed media pad on hand, but Scrapbookcom also makes an A2 size pad.

Next, I chose Ranger Inks from my stash that would work with these colors.

I started by watercoloring the flowers using the easiest technique I know; pressing my ink pad on a craft mat, then grabbing the color with a wet waterbrush to paint. I love how easy the watercolor glides on the mixed media paper. It's very heavyweight and there's no worry about the paper buckling or fraying from the mixture. You can layer colors with ease as well. I zoomed in on the photo above to show you how I watercolored my blooms, then went in with more of the same color to deepen it.

After watercoloring my flowers, I colored with a touch of my green ink to outline them and filled in my backdrop with my blue ink mixture. I also splattered on some white paint. 

I wanted to try heat embossing on the black mixed media paper, and heat embossed my sentiment. The sentiment is actually one long quote, so I used my mint tape to mask off the desired sections for stamping and heat embossing. When finished, I trimmed my sentiment strips and popped them up on adhesive foam strips. 

Now, the challenge for myself was to create 2 cards using the same colors. 

Next up, I'm using the Stacey Parks 4 layer stencil set, Cosmopolitan - Floral Impressions. I absolutely love that these stencils are etched with the brand name and also NUMBERED, one through four. It makes it so easy to know the order in which you should stencil! As you can see below, I chose a different color for each stenciled image. 

I used the same ink colors as the first card, inking on the white mixed media paper. I also used my Scrapbookcom blending brushes for this. I love them, they're my favorite!

Both cards were so easy to create. I really love the artsy look to the stenciled card. I also trimmed down my card panel to about half an inch under an A2 size, to allow room for layering on some pretty, coordinating orange paper from the Scrapbookcom Joyful paper pad. Both of my card panels are mounted on Neenah A2 vertical cards. I also used some Pops of color for the center of my bloom, and again, splattered white paint all around. My sentiment was die cut using the Joyful - Hello Hi Friend die set and my exclusive black Platinum 6 die cut system.

Using Your Die Cutting Machine as a Money Maker (+Coupon Code!)

You all know that I love my Cricut Explore.  I mean, really, really, love it.  So much so, that I signed up to be an affiliate a couple years ago.  I use it for so many things.  During the holidays, I spend a lot of time making custom vinyl decals for tumblers and mugs by custom order.  Not only is it a super fun crafting tool, but I'm actually making money, using it!  Let me share a couple things that relate to my Cricut, but the general information I give will apply to other brands as well.

Having a little side income is an added bonus and if you love to tinker with technology, you can visit many free font websites and load up some really fun fonts to play with.  I love hand lettering fonts and calligraphy fonts and have used many for my own personal use.  Some of the artists who design these fonts do require that you purchase a commercial fee license if you plan on making items for sale, but these are usually very small, generally starting at $5.00.  Not a bad price, if you're going to use them as a money maker.  Do your research and google how to upload fonts to your computer.  Once they're loaded to your computer, you simply right click on the folder that holds your files and click to install.  

If you use Cricut Design Space™, once you log in, you'll find your new fonts under "system" fonts.  They may not be in alphabetical order, so be sure to scroll to the end of your list to find them.

I'm seeing so many hand crafted die cuts being sold on Etsy and I really need to get in the game.  One of my goals this year is to stop letting things accumulate and start listing.   I'm an avid cardmaker and have quite the stock pile from doing design team work.  I'm so busy, I haven't taken the time to whittle down this stock pile.  I've come to realize.....THIS IS MONEY JUST SITTING HERE!  I need to sell my handmade cards!
