Easter Critter Card for Spellbinders

Spellbinders has revealed their club memberships for February, and I'm sharing my card featuring the Stamp & Die of the Month Club Kit. "Spring Smiles" is the name of this months set and it's absolutely adorable! I was so smitten, I also carried some of my details to the inside of my A2 sized card. Scroll down for creative details, with my supply list at the end.

I wanted to show you my photo below, before I assembled my card. My card panel was created by placing masking tape over the lower portion of my card, then stamping directly over the edge of the tape. One of the stamps included in this months set is a trio of blooms. I promptly chopped those blooms into 3 pieces. They'll be easy to stamp as a group next time, so no worries.

I did however, want to angle some of my blossoms, because sometimes I like to be a little extra, hehe. After stamping, I peeled off my tape and proceeded to color my images.

I also did some die cutting with my critter images and some of my blooms. This kit includes 8 dies to accommodate all the images in the stamp set.

Here are the colors I used:

Birds: OR1.3 Papaya, OR1.6 Orangutan, YO2.3 Buttercup, YO2.2 Pudding, RV0.1 Cotton Candy, RVO.2 Bubble Gum, YG2.5 Avocado

Blooms: OR1.3 Papaya, YO2.3 Buttercup, RV0.1 Cotton Candy, YG2.5 Avocado

Bunnies: RV0.1 Cotton Candy, RVO.2 Bubble Gum, C-G1 Cool Gray 1

I also used a white gel pen to dot the inside of each floral bloom, to highlight the dots on the bunny and bird bow ties and add more embellishment to my birds bodies.

Although the Quick & Easy Card Club Membership did not make a comeback this year, I did use my papers from an older Spellbinders card kit that I had in my stash. The August 2023 Quick & Easy ard kit, The Fun Life, includes some of my favorite papers and I'm so glad I still had some left. The brown trim, however, was from some scraps in my stash.

I still had some floral die cuts that I didn't use on the front of my card, so I decided to create a little scene on the inside. I actually trimmed the floral bottoms to be flush with the curvy hillside that I trimmed with my scissors. It was easier to do this and adhere everything flat, with no bumps from the die cuts. You can always do simple stamping and then cover the bottoms with paper, but I wanted to use up my die cuts.

 

My sentiments were stamped with Catherine Pooler Ink in Midnight for the inside of my card, and Succulent for the outside. Succulent is actually not available yet to the public until Feb. 5th, tomorrow!

Winter Rose Garden Card for Spellbinders

Hello fellow cardmakers! I'm still celebrating Christmas in July, and today's card features brand new products released last week from Spellbinders Paper Arts. I'm so excited to create with the Winter Rose Background Press Plate from the Handmade Holidays collection. Do I have a BetterPress system? No, I do not. If you're like me, you might have a lot of tools in your craft space. Or perhaps, you're a minimalist and are super choosy about what you purchase. Although I love the concept of the BetterPress system, I personally could not commit to another tool in my craft space, when they were first released. 

With that being said, I just recently discovered that there are other ways to use the Letterpress plates and was happy for Spellbinders to send me this beautiful plate to play with. 

One of my fellow Spellbinders affiliates, Joanne Maddi from Joanne's Craftroom, created a very well done 8 minute YouTube video on the process and I highly recommend you check it out if you'd like to try this technique: YT Video.

If you have a Platinum 6, the sandwich that you will use will be the same as the "emboss a cut shape" sandwich.

It's hard to see the embossing in my photo above but I was pleasantly surprised and very happy with the results. 

My personal opinion is that you will get a deeper impression using the BetterPress system, based on images I've seen. I may eventually invest in the BetterPress, but for now, I'm happy with this little "hack".

I set out to do some watercoloring with my Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real brusher markers. I did some swatching trying to decide on colors but the colors, once diluted with water look much different than the swatched colors. I'm also coloring on white cardstock, instead of watercolor paper, so it can also be tricky, as cardstock can absorbs color quickly and I didn't want a blotchy look.

I swiped my Zigs on a craft mat, then grabbed the color with a wet waterbrush. I even mixed some of the colors together to create more shade variation, and went in after coloring my images to deepen some of the colors even more. I took care not to over-saturate, but also to have enough water so it doesn't turn out blotchy. You may want to test some cardstock before you begin.

Spellbinders now has the Yasutomo Niji Aquarelle 36 color palette in their shop and this is in my wishlist for the next thing to pick up when I place my next order. You may want to consider giving these pretty colors a try! They are very reasonably priced.

I'm so happy with how this turned out. I used my Spellbinders Splatter White for my "snow". I love this stuff! Click on the product link above and check out the tutorial on it's usage. There's only a tiny amount in the jar but it's highly concentrated and a little goes a very long way. I typically mix a tiny amount with drops of water from my paintbrush and mix it on an a small acrylic block. 

It's a simple matter, at that point, to just flick the mix off the acrylic block with your paint brush and direct the splatters where you want them to go. Easy peasy!

Also, my sentiment was created using the Handmade Sentiments Etched Dies, also from the Handmade Holidays collection. It comes with a banner outline die and 3 different banner holiday sentiments.

I used Spellbinders Pink Sand cardstock as the color backing on my sentiment. For my card panel background, I used Spellbinders cardstock in Sage. My card panel and cardstock were all trimmed down to dimensions that would fit my A2 white card.

Please note, the Winter Rose background press plate also comes in a stencil bundle, if you prefer coloring with stencils. I also have that bundle linked in my supply list below.

This is how I imagine my winter rose garden would look like, if I had one, haha. I do not have a green thumb and all my friends and family can testify to that fact. I hope I've inspired you today though! Have a wonderful day!

July Inspiration for So Suzy Stamps - Anything Goes

This month, at So Suzy Stamps, the design team has free reign with an Anything Goes theme.  It's the first of the month so the team has come together with a new round of creative projects to help you utilize your collection of So Suzy Stamps.  

My project today is a CAS card that features several stamps; Fairy with Flower, Herb 1, Spire Sage and Sunny and Bright.  You'll also find affiliate shopping links at the end of this post.

You'll need a few additional things to re-create this project:

A4 White Card (8.3" x 11.7" dimensions, folded in half) Kaisercraft

Water based brush markers (Zig, Marvy, Tombow) Greens, Gray, light blue

Nuvo Bubblegum Crystal Drops

Ranger Stickles Glitter Glue -Firefly and Eucalyptus

Memento Dye Ink Tuxedo Black

Water Brush

Misti stamping tool

iron

*optional washi tape

*optional, parchment paper

Craft mat

Craft heat tool

**Note, you may wish to create a card panel instead of directly creating images on an A4 card. Some warping will occur due to watercolors, much of which can be ironed out.

1.  Ink the SSS Fairy with Flower Stamp on the lower right corner of cardstock, using your Misti stamp positioner.  Ink 2-3 times for full coverage.

2. Using the Spire Sage Stamp, swipe with a gray water based marker and stamp along bottom and top edge of card.  *Optional, place a strip of washi tape under the cardstock to avoid messy ink getting on your Misti.

3. Use the Herb 1 stamp and stamp along top and bottom edge of card, swiping stamp directly with various green shades of a water based marker.  You'll be stamping over the gray, inked sage image but that's ok.  Heat set your ink prior to next step.

4.  Swipe a light blue water based brush marker on your craft mat and grab color with slightly wet waterbrush.  Fill in some of the empty space around the foliage, with the blue.  Blot as needed with paper towel.  Try not to over saturate cardstock.

**Lightweight or medium weight cardstock will warp when wet- grab your iron!

5.  Heat set your watercoloring.  Use an iron to smooth out any warping with either a craft iron or a regular iron.  Place image face down on ironing board.  You can place cardstock between two pieces of parchment paper if you like.  Take care not to burn your cardstock

6. Add glitter glue to leaves and Nuvo crystal drops to tiny buds.  Allow to dry 4 hours or overnight for the Nuvo.

As we say in the South, "Ain't she purty?"   A pretty little garden for my fairy.  This card would brighten anyone's day!
