Christmas Angel Card with Galaxy Sky for Adornit

Christmas is just a handful of days away, and I'm still making Christmas cards.  Today, I'm coloring up a galaxy night sky on this lovely paintable image from Adornit, featuring the Season's Greetings collection, designed by Lindsay Ostrom.

Adornit has released several new Art Play Paintable collections and, keeping you in mind, there's something for everyone; seasonal, all occasion, documented faith and more.  You can check out the entire selection of paintables, here.

I love coloring with the cake paints.  This background was so easy to create, simply by dipping your wet waterbrush into the cake paint and swipe random sections of color.  I started with the dark blue's and purples, then added some red and black.  A white gel pen comes in handy for "dotting" stars in the sky.  Just make sure your painted background is dry, first.  The artistic paintables paper is designed to accept many mediums of color.  I've even used waterbased markers and watercolor pencils.

The Seasons Greetings collection comes with 9 images to color and 9 sentiments for mixing and matching.  I chose the Peace on Earth sentiment, coloring with the dark blue/purple paints, but decided to fussy cut the words, so as not to cover up my angel too much.  It was detailed work but I love the outcome.  Of course, you could put the sentiment on the inside of your card as well.  I've trimmed strips of foam tape to pop up my sentiment for added dimension.

Grandma's Special Soup With Adornit

This is my second project that I'm sharing today, some good old fashioned homemade goodness; Grandma's Special Soup.  This is actually from the new OCCASIONS Art Play Paintables Collection designed by Lindsay Ostrom, for Adornit.

For this project, I chose to use my Zig Clean Color brushes.  I wanted to get the true feel of that favorite can of soup that we all know and love, and I like the way that they blend.  I'm particularly fond of the grey.  It shades nicely from light to dark.  My white gel pen is a staple on most of my projects and this is no exception.  I've colored in a little "light" on my can, as you can see.

I really wanted this card to have an old fashioned feel so I've incorporated lace and gingham ribbon.  I'm also using brand new Adornit scrapbook papers design by Laura Kelly.   These papers bring a little edgy flavor to my old fashioned theme.

This new collection can be found in independent scrapbook stores.  If your store is not carrying Adornit products, ask them if they would like to!  They will be available soon at adornit.com and scrapbook.com as well so keep checking back.

Adornit and Mountain Plains Crafters Hop - Coloring Books!

Welcome to another joint blog hop with Adornit and Mountain Plains Crafters!
We're so happy to be introducing you to the brand new Adornit Art Play Coloring Books.
Coloring books are super hot right now.  You can find entire sections in your local book store, dedicated to this genre.  What you won't find?  Coloring books with thick, artist paper.  The good stuff.  Perfect for just about any paint medium or colored pencils, if that's what you like to use.

You should have arrived from Paula's blog so if you did, you're in the right place.  I'm the last stop on the hop.  So let me share what I've created for you today.  I was given the new coloring book designed by Lindsay Ostrom, called Halloween as well as Folk Garden, designed by artist and owner of Adornit, Carolee McMullins.

For the Halloween coloring book, I chose to focus on some neutral themes that would also translate well into other Autumn, Fall or Thanksgiving events.  Why?  Well, today is Nov. 1st and Halloween is over, haha.  Unless of course you live for all the candy markdowns that start today!  (Count me in!)

Lindsay designed some super cool art for this book.  I'm here to show you that this is not a "one trick pony" coloring book.  It's Halloween and more!

For my first project, I've colored a pair of tags for these gorgeous pumpkin treat boxes.  Wouldn't these be nice to give to your family at Thanksgiving?  How about your favorite school teacher or Sunday School teacher?

The pumpkins were cut with my Cricut Explore using the Tags, Bags, Boxes and More 2 cartridge.  I used the Adornit Blender paper which, if you don't mind my saying, cuts like butter on the light cardstock setting of the Explore.  Oh my, I just love it!

Below, is one of the pages in the Halloween coloring book.  You can see several fun images.  I zoomed right in on the tag shape.  My coloring medium of choice for this project is my Tombow dual brush pens.  Notice the cut guidelines for each piece?  The pages are perforated as well so you can easily tear them out when finished and make something amazing!

And, here's my finished tag.  You can see that I did a little watercoloring as well and added some additional embellishments... polka dots and a criss-cross pattern.  Do what you want, that's the beauty of coloring!

Here's my second pumpkin box and tag.  I have a confession to make.  See that chevron bow?  I made a matching orange chevron bow for my other tag above.  I had packed everything up for traveling to take photos elsewhere and in the process, my orange bow disappeared.  Insert sad face.... however, I did find a lovely button!  Whew...crisis averted.

By the way, all my ribbons are from May Arts Ribbon today and all my adhesives are from Tombow.  I've mentioned it in previous projects but I'll say it again today...my favorite watercoloring technique is to take your marker such as the Tombow, swipe it a few times across an acrylic block until you see some good color, then spritz your colored ink with water.  Take a wet paintbrush and dab and paint, dab and paint.  Add more water if you need to .  Sometimes I like to get varying shades of color by not adding as much water or adding a lot.   Color your background right up.  It's quick, easy and clean up is a breeze; a paper towel.
If you have pretty handwriting, you can fill in the empty space with something lovely for your recipient, stamp a sentiment or do as I've done and add some wordy stickers.  Isn't this wreath shape with pumpkins just darling?

Next, I've colored a background page from the Halloween coloring book.  It's full of pumpkins, stars and little swirls.  This is how I began.......

Next, I filled in my background with the watercolor technique mentioned above, and my Tombow dual brush pens.

And the result?

A happy little family of Thanksgiving place cards.  It's going to be a small affair at my mom's this year.  Just five of us.  So each card has the name of the person using...... Adornit letter stickers.  I came into possession of these recently and have really enjoyed putting them to use.

I'm not going to lie... it was a real struggle cutting up that beautiful colored page.  But, once I started chopping, I couldn't stop, haha.  Again, I'm using the Adornit blender paper under the top layer of my place cards.  I've added some extras like, tiny liquid pearls, swirls with my colored pencils and more dots with a white gel pen and Tombows.  Each card has a little flag tag that I popped out with foam squares and added a fussy cut pumpkin from the colored page.

Next, I'm featuring some of the pages from the Folk Garden Coloring book.  I picked another background page to color because I really love this design.  There's so much open space which means I get to really play!  I used my Zig Clean Color brushes for this project, just to switch it up a little and get some brighter colors.

I kept everything pretty uniform in color and filled in my background with more watercoloring.

Here's a close-up of some embellishing I did, filling in some open space with tiny dots.

When I finished this background, I couldn't decide how I wanted to use it.  A background for a card?  Cut it up for something else?  I really wanted to keep it intact if I could.  When in doubt, ask a friend.  So, I posed this question to the girls at Mountain Plains Crafters and Pam suggested to frame it for wall art.  Ooooh....I like it!  And so, I did.  She also suggested maybe adding some flowers.  I tried a couple different looks but I kept coming back to less is more on this one.  Would you agree?

Lastly, I've chosen an image from Folk Garden that speaks to me, particularly because I spy sweet little tea cups.  My mother-in-law had a beautiful collection of Blue Willow china and I leaned in that direction just a wee bit.  I've done some watercoloring and direct coloring as well and filled in my background with blue watercolor and white gel pen swirls.

Since this this sweet image is enclosed in a glass dome, I've decided to add a little dimension and sparkle with my Mod Podge Dimensional Magic glue.  Love this stuff.  When it dries, it leaves a gorgeous, sparkly shine and dimension.

See what I mean?

To finish it off, I decided to bust out my sewing machine.  I am NOT the most gifted person when it comes to sewing, let me tell you.  So don't look too closely.  Even so, the fun is in the creating, right?  And I did have fun, for sure.  I created a little wall hanging that I thought would go nicely in the kitchen.  If you have a little coffee nook, this would be a perfect place for this.  The burlap ribbon and pearls are from May Arts Ribbon.  Any bubble embellishments you see today are from DoubleClick Skittles.

Now, head on back to adornit.com/blog and follow the instructions for entering to win one of these lovely coloring books for yourself.  That reminds me........

ADORNit feature - Wall hanging with Art Play Paintables

On Monday, the design team at Mountain Plains Crafters participated in a joint blog hop with ADORNit; creator of all things, fabric, paper crafts and the all new Art Play Paintables, designed by artist Lindsay Ostrom.  We created sooooo many lovely things that I'm breaking it down in a more detailed format this week, featuring each of my creations in detail with tutorials.

To see all the projects from the ADORNit blog hop, go here:

Next up,  I've used the ADORNit 8"Pointed wood bracket panel to create a sweet wall hanging that would be perfect for a girls room.  I have all boys so I don't often have the chance to create for little girls.

I started by embellishing the flip side of the ADORNit blender paper "Pink Chevron" with a white paint dabber and glitter.  Next, I watercolored my image, which is from the Art Play Paintable "Love You" collection, with Tombow pens in Bright.  I cut an oval image of the quote with the Lil' Inker Design Stitched mat oval frame and my Cuttlebug.  I used the "Burnished Mustard" fabric from ADORNit to create a fringed, knotted hanging.  This panel is very thin so I used some small thumb tacks but be VERY CAREFUL not to go in too far or your nail will come through to the other side.  If this does happen, get a hammer (holding your wood secure) and lightly tap the exposed nail back in.  And yes, this happened to me, haha, but you can't even tell.  Whew!  Disaster averted!

I made some quilled flowers using the ADORNit blender paper, "Green Pixie Dots" and My Favorite Things Die-Namics rolled flower die, and even made some tiny leaves with the same paper.  If you've never quilled before, you will need a quilling tool.  They're under $5.00 and My Favorite Things has tutorial videos for instruction.  There is a bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it's so much fun!  I credit one of my design team member friends at Mountain Plains Crafters, MariLynn DeGroot, for inspiring me to try a new technique.  She's kind of brilliant.

Did I mention I did a little sanding on the paper?  I love giving the distressed look to something pretty.  Gives it a little edge.

ADORNit Feature - Art Play Paintables "Love" Candle

On Monday, the design team at Mountain Plains Crafters participated in a joint blog hop with ADORNit; creator of all things, fabric, paper crafts and the all new Art Play Paintables, designed by artist Lindsay Ostrom.  We created sooooo many lovely things that I'm breaking it down in a more detailed format this week, featuring each of my creations in detail with tutorials.

To see all the projects from the ADORNit blog hop, go here:

*I'm so happy to say, that this candle has been chosen to be on display at the ADORNit booth next week at the CHA (Craft and Hobby Association) Winter Mega show in Anaheim, CA.*

Today's creation is a watercolor painted candle.  This is so easy to do, you won't believe it.  You will need these tools:  a pillar candle, tissue paper (the kind used in gift bags), a heat tool, and wax paper, along with your coloring tools

I started by tracing over the Art Play Paintable design from the "Happy" collection, with tissue paper using first a black Marvy fine point Le Pen, then coloring with my Tombow dual brush pens.  I even used my Tombow blender pen to give some highlights here and there on the wording.

Next, cut out your colored tissue design leaving about 1/4" border.  Place it where desired on your candle.  Take a large piece of wax paper, wax side down, and hold it tightly over your design and around candle.  (I was so into my project, forgot to take a picture of this step!) Take your heating tool, (I use an embossing heat tool found in craft stores) and slowly heat your design. These heat tools get very hot, so be sure not to burn your fingers.  You will visibly see the melting or beading of wax occur after a few seconds.  The entire heat process only takes about a minute.  When finished, slowly peel off the wax paper and you are left with a stunning candle!  These make wonderful gifts for any occasion.  You will be amazed at the color and clarity.  Every bit of it transferred to this candle.  Have fun with this technique!

Check back tomorrow for details on my next project.

ADORNit feature....Art Play Paintables "Vintage Camper"

On Monday, the design team at Mountain Plains Crafters participated in a joint blog hop with ADORNit; creator of all things, fabric, paper crafts and the all new Art Play Paintables, designed by artist Lindsay Ostrom.  We created sooooo many lovely things that I'm breaking it down in a more detailed format this week, featuring each of my creations in detail with tutorials.  Here's the original post with all the hop creations: http://www.adornit.com/blog/art-play-blog-hop/

For my first project, I'm using an Art Play Paintable design from the "Ladybug" collection.  I've created a mixed media piece which has been embossed, watercolored, sanded and glittered.  I even distressed my paper, tearing the edges.  I've used my Tombow Dual Brush pens from the Bright collection, using a watercolor technique.  You can see that I embossed just the upper left section of my paper, after I watercolored it.  I love that the embossed swirls match the swirls of "smoke" trailing from the camper.  :)

The cardstock used for the card below is from the ADORNit Blender Basics paper pack.  It's good, heavy, double-sided paper and I simply trimmed the 12x12 piece to 6" and scored it.  It has a fun chevron design on the inside that I can embellish as well!  The papers used, from the Blender Basics, are "Mustard Damask" and "Blue Chevron".

Glitter by DecoArt Inc. Glamour Dust, Natural burlap twine by May Arts Ribbon

You can see a better view here where I've glittered the moon and stars.

Check back tomorrow for an "out of the box" project that you are going to love!
