DIY Christmas Canvas Art

If you've never attempted canvas art, I have an easy project for you today.  We're going to put several skills together, including stenciling, painting, stamping and glue application.  Follow along for creative details on this art that features Buttons Galore Fun Flurries Sparkletz as the focal point.

(FTC Disclosure: as an affiliate for various companies in the craft industry, I will receive a small commission for purchases made through my convenient affiliate links.  This does not affect your purchase price.)

If you're intimidated by creating your own painted pieces, start small.  I grabbed a few supplies that can be found at most local big box craft stores or Walmart, including a 4x4 inch stretched canvas and Plaid Fok Art paint.  I'm only working with 3 colors today.  Start small, gain confidence and stretch those wings!

I started by laying down a layer of dark blue, then decided to mix in the lavender color.  If you don't like the colors, mix it up!  If you make a mistake, you can always cover it up with more paint.

I did sketch out a circle with a pencil before painting, drawing my own ornament.  Again, if you mess up and your circle doesn't look right, you can always erase on canvas, with your pencil eraser.  Once I colored my background, I filled in with the blue paint, mixing in a little white paint as well.

Next, I stenciled some stars using white pigment ink and a domed blender tool from Scrapbook.com.  The stencil is from Ranger Ink and you'll find many of the products that I used at the end of this post.  I also dabbed on a little white paint after stenciling, so it would grab the glitter that I sprinkled on top.  Use the pointed end of a paint brush to dab on little dots of snow onto the background with white paint.

I didn't get a photo of the glue process, but once your ornament paint is dry, grab a bottle of clear glue ( I used Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L) and draw around the circle, filling inwards.  Liberally apply the Fun Flurries Sparkletz on top of the glue.  You can use a sharp craft tool or even a toothpick to rearrange or add more bling to fill in any gaps.  This pack of Sparkletz includes tiny snowflakes in shimmery mirror colors as well as white, clear bubble gems, sequins and sparkly prism gems.  It's gorgeous in person!

I initially drew on an ornament topper but decided to use the real thing and give more 3D dimension to my project.  Use a plier to cut off a plastic topper from a mini ornament, like the ones you see pictured.  I used scissors to trim it just a bit, then pressed it gently to flatten it a bit.  It will split a little, but that's ok.  Hot glue holds this in place, along with a thin piece of silver ribbon as the loop on top.  It turned out perfectly and any imperfections only lend to the mixed media feel.

Because the base of the canvas is surrounded by a thin layer of wood inside, I was able to heat emboss a sentiment with clear embossing ink and white embossing powder, using a masking technique to only stamp part of the sentiment.  You'll need a craft heat tool for this and painters tape or washi tape to mask the part of the stamp that you don't want imaged.  Also, the craft heat tool helps speed the drying process for your paint and glued adornment.

I hope you'll give this a try.  It would make a lovely Christmas gift, or you can hang on your wall or mix in with a decorative tabletop arrangement.  Thanks for popping in today!  Terri

Coffee & Hearts Shaker Card

We all have our coffee loving friends, right?  Well, I have a coffee loving and crafting best friend.  Her name is Nancy.  I made this card just for her, on her birthday yesterday.  We are both super busy ladies but we try to make time now and then to get together for a cup o' joe or a crafting session.  It doesn't happen nearly as often as I would like!  We did, however, head to a concert last night to see Air Supply.  They were awesome!  Alas, that is a story for another day.

(FTC Disclosure: as an affiliate for various companies in the craft industry, I will receive a small commission for purchases made through my convenient affiliate links.  This does not affect your purchase price.)

I like to think all my cards are special but when you are creating for your best friend, it's more so.  I used the Jillibean Soup Small Heart Shaker Card Set.  It comes with 8 cards and envelopes, along with 8 shaker hearts that have a peel off sticky backing on the backside.  These are not yet available at Scrapbook.com, however if you click the link, you can select to be notified when they are in stock.  I love them!  They are so easy to use!

I also used the Jillibean Soup Hug in a Mug shaker die and stamp set, also available soon.  I love the possibilities with that adorable heart and cup; gift cards, shape cards and more.

In addition, I used Ranger Ink distress oxide ink in Worn Lipstick for my cup.  I simply trimmed a piece of watercolor paper and dredged it several times on a craft mat that had been inked and spritzed with water.  Once dry, I splattered water droplets and blotted with a paper towel.

My paper is from the Echo Park Hello Faith collection.  Isn't that plaid lovely?

I have another tip for you as well.  Because the Jillibean soup cards come with the heart already cut out on paper, how do you then line up more paper and trim a similar sized heart so your shaker will fit?  I discovered one of the small heart dies in the Scrapbookcom exclusive heart nesting dies works perfectly for this.  You can then pop your shaker through the heart cut out on the card and the heart cut on your panel.

Although Jillibean Soup makes shaker fillers, I'm using Sparkletz from Buttons Galore and More.  All of my adhesives are by Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, including the foam circles that I used to pop up my plaid panel and coffee cup.  Thanks so much for stopping in!  Stay crafty...... Terri

Halloween Card With Direct Water to Pencil Coloring Video

Hello cardmakers.  Today, I'm coloring with Adornit products and featuring a direct color technique video; using your water brush to grab color directly from your watercolor pencil.  You can call this a coloring technique or a painting technique.  Either way, it's easy and fun to do!

(FTC Disclosure: as an affiliate for various companies in the craft industry, I will receive a small commission for purchases made through my convenient affiliate links.  This does not affect your purchase price.)

The image I'm coloring is from the Wicked Art Play Paintable 12x12 inch sheet that includes 12 different images to color on a watercolor type paper.

I'm also using my Adornit watercolor pencils, along with my Adornit medium water brush.  These watercolor pencils are some of my all time favorites and come in 36 beautiful colors.

For a limited time, you can grab a coloring supplies bundle for an amazing price!  Adornit is your one stop shop for coloring, fabric, boutique apparel and more!

I have a 5 minute process You Tube video, showing you how fun and easy this coloring technique is.  Plus, it's virtually mess-free!   If you're not already subscribed to my YT channel, I hope you'll click the red subscribe button on the video screen and give a thumbs up on this video.  You'll find product links scattered throughout this post, and also in the video description.

Thank you!  Terri

Blog Hop with Crackerbox & Suzy Stamps and Imagine Crafts

Hello cardmakers.  Today is Day 1 of a 2 day blog hop with Imagine Crafts and Crackerbox & Suzy Stamps!  If you've been following along, you should have arrived from Iris Rodriguez's blog.   There's several prizes up for grabs so be sure and comment at all the blog stops along the way to qualify to win.

Imagine Crafts was so kind to allow us to choose some yummy inks to play with.  I chose to work with the Brilliance Pigment Ink Dewdrops.  They dry quickly but also stay wet long enough to heat emboss, if you so desire.

For my card, I chose to use a smooshing technique with a watercolor paper panel.  I mixed some of my colors too, to get an orange-ish hue, as well.  The colors I'm using today are Rocket Red, Sunflower yellow, Coffee Bean, Pearlescent Chocolate, Cosmic Copper, Pearlescent Rust and Moonlight White.  To achieve the orange hue, I mixed the yellow and red together.  This is such a fun technique and always gives great results,  just dab your ink on a craft mat, spritz with water and smoosh your watercolor paper into the mix.  I did this twice, drying with me craft heat tool inbetween smooshing.

For my one-liner word, I masked my sentiment and stamped with my Misti, the word "procaffeinating" from the Procaffeinating stamp using the Brilliance Moonlight White ink, heat embossing with white embossing powder to really make it pop.  I used a leftover piece from my trimmed watercolor panel to stamp and heat emboss part of my sentiment on the inside.  I heat embossed, using the Cosmic Copper for the inside sentiment.

To color my coffee, I stamped the cup with the Pearlescant Chocolate, then used the Copper Rust for the Coffee Heart stamped image (inside the cup).  I dabbed some of the Coffee Bean and Chocolate ink on a craft mat and used my waterbrush to mix and swirl the colors.  A touch of Moonlight White was used on my hearts.

I have shopping links to most of the products used today, further down.  Next, be sure and hop on over to Jennifer Vanderbeek's blog.  If you get lost or need to start at the beginning, visit  the Crackerbox & Suzy Stamps blog.  Thanks so much for stopping by and good luck!
