Modern Butterfly Sympathy Card

As we all do from time to time, I had the need to make a sympathy card today. I also purchased some Gina K Designs products recently that needed some love. In addition, I wanted to make something more modern, yet keep it somewhat simplistic. Scroll down for some brief chit chat, creative details and a clickable supply list at the end of this post.

There are so many different directions to go to, when making a sympathy card. For my friend, who's father passed away, she's not the frilly type. I also didn't want to go over the top or throw a lot of things at this card.

Rather than create a separate card panel to mount on a card, I decided to trim and score my own A2 side fold card with heavyweight cardstock that wouldn't show any ink on the flipside.

I started by doing some partial ink blending with my Gina K Designs oval mask/stencil using Ranger Ink distress oxide ink in Faded Jeans. I chose this as the dominant color, to tie in with the tiny bit of blue on my butterfly. 

Butterflies symbolize transformation and I thought it would be an appropriate symbol for my sympathy card. I stamped the Gina K Designs Blooming Butterfly image in black hybrid ink with my stamp positioner, then colored with OLO Markers. Here are the colors that I used:

OR4.1, 0R4,2, OR1.3,  0R3.4, 0R3.7, B4.3, YG2.5, YG8.5

I also embellished my butterfly with a white gel pen. As you can see in the close-up photo below, I also drew some white lines across the body of the butterfly and smudged them. It wasn't exactly to my liking, so I touched up the white lines with a black fine tip pen. I was much happier with it after the touch up!

I also used the coordinating Blooming Butterfly Die to cut with my Platinum 6 die cut machine.

This card took me approximately 30 minutes to make. Some of that time was figuring out what I wanted to do. I actually had a different plan to begin with but I'm very happy with my end results.

Lastly, I popped up my butterfly and sentiment with adhesive foam strips. By the way, I just love the scripty fonts of the sentiments in this stamp set. They're just so delicate! Also, my sentiment was stamped with Catherine Pooler ink in Macchiato. 

 

I could have easily added some sequins or other sparkly embellishment, but my friend is not the bling-bling type and I chose to keep my design more simplistic.

Prayers For You Card

Here's a close up that also shows embossing with the Sunny Studio Stamps Sunburst embossing folder.  I used an ink smooshing technique for my background with Catherine Pooler Ink.  Simply press your ink onto a craft mat, spritz with a water mister, then "smoosh" your watercolor paper into the ink mixture.  It works best if you use one ink color at a time and dry in between colors.

When finished drying I ran through my manual emboss machine with the Sunburst folder and used a nail file across the raised edges of the sun rays to distress it.  I decided to cut my entire inked, embossed image in half, for a split panel card.  Both pieces are layered with white Neenah Solar White cardstock and raised with foam circles by Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.  You'll find all the products listed below.

I was surprised to discover how large the word "prayer" is.  Four inches across.  I love the font and it's rather thick, so I decided to stamp my image and scan it into a cut file with Brother Crafts USA Scan N Cut machine.  I have the CM350 model.  I love that you can scan stamped images and cut them, over and over.  By saving my image as a cut file, I can then simply place black card stock in my machine and cut the word directly without having to continually stamp it.

As you can see in the picture below, I cut 3 of the words, then stacked and adhered each one to create a raised, dimensional word on my card.  The Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L petite runner was perfect for this job.

Lastly, I used my Nuvo Crystal Drops in Morning Dew to adhere my sequins.  These sparkly, clear sequins are from 28 Lilac Lane and are not yet in the shop, but you can click the link below to be notified when they're available.  It will be very soon!  I love them!

New Release at Crackerbox and Suzy Stamps! Harry Potter, Gnomes, Halloween and More!

You heard it right, there's a whole lot of excitement with the Fall release here at Crackerbox & Suzy Stamps!  Several of our designers have created fun new stamps for your stamping pleasure but the buzz is all about Harry!  My teamie Tracy McLennon designed some fabulous Harry Potter stamps and Guardians of the Galaxy stamps, and everyone is gaga for them.  Olesya Andreyeva, fellow teammate, designed the Halloween stamps which work very nicely with the HP stamps.  I designed the small gnome stamps which work well with card making and also as planner stamps.  In addition, you will see new Pet Sympathy stamps and regular Sympathy stamps.  Whew!  That's a whole lot of awesome!

I jokingly refer to my gnomes as "Gnorman" and "Gnorma".  This comes as a 4 piece set called Gnome Family that also includes the small mushroom garden and gnome house.  I actually colored directly onto my mushroom garden stamp to get the single mushroom that you see below.

The sentiment I designed is called Gnome Sweet Gnome and I just think it is so sweet.  All my coloring is done with Zig Real Clean Color brushes today.  You'll find shopping links below.

I also used some of my dies to layer this hillside scene.
