Halloween and Fall SBCfest Card Inspiration

Hey friends, I'm so excited to share some special projects today. SBCfest kicked off today and I'm sharing some card inspiration based on the class that Laura Evangeline taught. Laura is one of the instructors for this free event. You can always catch the replay here and stay up to date on Saturday's events too. SBC fest is hosted by Scrapbook.com in September each year and is free for everyone. You can watch and craft along in the comfort of your own home and the instructors are some of your favorite industry makers.

I got a little sneak peek of the instructor inspo for their classes, as I'm an affiliate, and was really drawn to Laura's design. So when Scrapbookcom offered for me to CASE (copy) any of the instructor cards, I jumped on it! I mean, the design is fantastic!

This is my first time doing somewhat of a side by side comparison on the similarities and differences with another designer's cards. Imitation is absolutely the best form of flattery!

I only had a couple days to create before the event, so I only have 2 cards to share, based on the first two cards in Laura's inspiration shot below. She created 3 seasonal cards: Halloween, Fall and Christmas.

I created 2 cards based on the Halloween and Fall inspiration cards that she taught in her class.

Like Laura did, I used the Scrapbook.com Bat Decorative dies. These are nesting dies that come in a variety of sizes. Both of us used mint tape to create the rectangle outline for this A2 sized card.

She went with blue and green inking, I went with blue and orange. Actually, I used Cotton Candy ink but I picked up the wrong blender brush that still had orange on it. Rather than toss what I had started, I just kept going. So, orange it is! I planned to have a pink outline for my bats and pink background cardstock, but as crafters do when something doesn't go as planned we roll with it!

Here's a cool tip. I didn't have the gemstones that Laura used so I decided to embellish with my Pops of Color liquid embellishment. When applied, I just dropped a small to medium amount. So why do they look like enamel dots? I'm so glad you asked.

But first, I need to mention that I placed tiny trimmed adhesive foam squares behind my vellum circle. These would be markers for where I wanted to place my Pops of Color and would also help stabilize my vellum for what I'm about to do next.

Once I applied all my droplets, I picked up my card and slapped the edge of my card 2-3 times on my table. I did this for both ends of my card. This levels out your droplet and flattens it. When I say slap, I mean slap. Don't be super gentle, but don't get violent either, haha!

I discovered this quite by accident one day and it's one of my favorite tricks. No need to buy enamel dots when I can do this! Also, if your droplet is too small, it won't flatten out. If that happens, just add a little more. Let me also say, this may not always work. It depends on how thick your liquid is and even temperature may play a factor. I haven't tried it with glitter glue but I need to!

For both of my cards, I did some stenciling, using the same ink that I used for my inky background. For my bat card, I stenciled with the SBC Little Clouds stencil. My inks are Catherine Pooler Daydream and Cotton Candy (turned orange, haha). My background paper is from the SBC Playful paper pad.

For my Fall card below I used Catherine Pooler ink Catching Rays and Eucalyptus and the Market Bloom Spring Flowers 3 pc layered stencil set. I only used 2 of the stencils.

Laura's Fall card was created using the SBC Sunflower die set. I actually have that set but it has disappeared into the abyss of my craft room. Instead I chose similar flowers from the Sunny Lane Floral die set. I die cut my flower twice using a light yellow paper from my SBC Daybreak paper pad. My flower center is a darker bronze/orange paper from the same paper pad.

Laura used a lot of white paint splatter on her card and flower and I did the same. I used Spellbinders Splatter White mixed with a touch of water and splattered with a paint brush.

Before I splattered my flower though, I did some ink blending on my flower center with Catherine Pooler Macchiato ink and Ranger Distress oxide ink Vintage Photo for my flower center underneath.

All of my flower elements were popped up on adhesive foam strips, as was my vellum.

Laura added a string and bow accent to all of her cards and I love it. However, I really didn't have much string in my stash, so I opted to trim thin strips from my paper pads to place horizontally across my card.

In place of the bow, I added small sentiments for both of my cards. For my Halloween card, I trimmed the wording from my SBC Spooky paper pad.

For my Fall card, I stamped a sentiment from the SBC Wordfetti Fa Lala stamp set. It has Christmas sentiments but also some really great all occasion sentiments. I also glued on some Pink and Main confetti to my inked panel.

The background paper on my Fall card is from the Market Bloom paper pad. It's full of double sided patterned paper that also includes some solid papers. This golden yellow is just what I needed.

I absolutely love Laura's design that she incorporated in all 3 of her cards, which is why I accepted the challenge to CASE (copy) her cards. I will absolutely be using this design again in the future! Catch the replay on her SBCfest class if you missed it!

Christmas Inlaid Shaker Card for Catherine Pooler

Hey friends, I'm back with another project for Catherine Pooler featuring the new Holiday Magic release. This one is an inlaid Christmas shaker card. I wasn't sure what to call this technique as I was just kind of winging it, haha, but after looking on Google, sure enough, it's a thing. If you've never heard of it, I'll explain further down. I'll also have a clickable supply shopping list at the end of this post.

(FTC Disclosure: as an affiliate for various companies in the craft industry, I will receive a small commission for purchases made through my convenient affiliate links, at no additional cost to you.)

First, let me mention that I'm creating with products from the Nutcracker Sweet Bundle which includes dies, stamps, patterned paper and a sequin mix.

My card is a side fold A2 sized card with the side seam turned towards the top. I started by die cutting two different patterned papers using the Festive Joy Word die with my Platinum 6.

I removed the die cut word from the plaid paper and replaced it with the die cut word from the red snowflake paper, laid it all down on my card panel and lined it up how I wanted it.

I carefully tacked down a few spots with adhesive on my plaid paper to keep it lined up, then glued down my letters.

After my letters were glued down, I pulled my plaid paper back up. I strategically placed adhesive strips around the die cut letters that were glued down, leaving enough space to add the sequins, then removed the liner from the adhesive strips.

Next, I adhered a trimmed piece of adhesive sheet to the backside of my plaid paper, covering the empty space of the die cut word that was removed.

I then applied more adhesive strips to the backside of my plaid paper (avoiding the adhesive sheet section) and removed the liner from the adhesive strips.

I lined up my plaid paper and placed it over my word/shaker focal point. We now have an inlaid shaker card with the shaker element inside the inlaid wording. Fun, right?

I also had stamped lots of holly images from my Nutcracker stamp set for use on my last project and had enough leftover to use for this one. They had been watercolored with my CP Deck The Halls ink and Rockin' Red ink. You can see that project here, if you missed it.

Before I applied my holly die cuts to the corners, I decided at the last minute to create a frame for my card. I swiped Deck The Halls ink along the edges of an A2 white card panel and die cut with rectangle nesting dies using my Platinum 6 to create the frame. It really gives that something extra that I was looking for. I also glued some sequins to the front of my plaid panel for added sparkle, using the new Reykjavik sequin mix.

Lastly, I created a sentiment from the Holiday Joy stamp set, using the mask technique with my stamp positioner. This was inked with more Rockin' Red and Deck The Halls ink. I love that color combo so much. They're classic Christmas colors and work so well together.

I know that was a lot of information I just threw at you, so let me know if you have any questions in the comment section. Thanks so much for stopping in!

Terri
