New Hexi-Gem Collection from Spellbinders

The new Hexi-Gem Collection is live today at Spellbinders! Today's card features new hot foil products and dies from this collection, along with some coloring with Olo Markers which is a line of markers that Spellinders now carries. Scroll down for creative  details. You'll find product links at the end of this post.

I love my Glimmer hot foil system so, when presented with the opportunity to play with new Glimmer products, I will jump on that! I took the Hexi-Gem Blooms Glimmer Hot Foil Plate and Die Set for a spin, doing some partial hot foiling at each corner of my A2 card panel. This is really easy to do, it just takes a little extra time since you have to turn off your Glimmer system after each foiling to remove the platform and run through your die cut system, which in my case, is the Platinum 6.

Once I foiled all my corners, I then foiled the full bloom on white cardstock and colored it, along with coloring all four corners with Olo Markers using these colors: O2.2, OR4.2 OR4.4, BG2.1 B2.0, R-G5 and BG0.8.

I actually grabbed some of the color from  BG0.8 which is a really dark green with the tip of BG2.1 to do some color mixing on those leaves. I needed a darker color but BG0.8 was too dark. You can totally mix colors by tapping your tips! It blends out quickly, so keep tapping as much as you need.

The center of my blooms was created by tapping in some multi-surface paint with a sharp tool using white, brown and a dark yellow.

Next, I trimmed white and light green cardstock alternating with 3 different sizes of the Essential Hexi-Gems Etched Dies.  The green cardstock was from my Spellbinders May Quick & Easy card kit. I took my full foiled bloom and trimmed it down one size smaller than the smallest Hexi-Gem etched die on my card, and adhered all the shaped die cuts, popping the base up on adhesive foam.

My sentiment is from the Glimmer hot foil plate/die sets from Yana's Birthday collection, called Yana's Special Sentiments. I hot foiled the sentiment on vellum than adhered it to a coordinating light green cardstock die cut outline.

It's funny how lighting affects the way a foiled card looks. As you can see from both photos, it's all in the angles and light. I almost forgot to mention the color of foil that I used. For my foiled blooms I used  Satin Gold which is currently available in two different sets of 4 packs, but not individually. I used black glimmer hot foil for my sentiment.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great day!

Terri

Just Cards Video Hop Modern Wedding Shaker Card

Hey crafty guys and gals, it's time for this month's round up of video inspiration from the Just Cards Video Hop crew.  The theme this month is wedding/anniversary.  I've created a contemporary wedding card for your viewing pleasure!

(FTC Disclosure: as an affiliate for various companies in the craft industry, I will receive a small commission for purchases made through my convenient affiliate links.  This does not affect your purchase price.)

My project features the exclusive Crate Paper Flourish collection which you can find at scrapbook.com.  I have really enjoyed this collection.  It includes 200 pieces.  Yes, 200!  I am so smitten by the doodled frame and you'll see later in the video, how I built my card with the frame as the featured element.  P.S.... this collection is currently on sale.  Bonus!

You'll also see in my video how I went "old school" for the making of this shaker; no fancy shaker kits.  Just good old fashioned adhesive foam.  All my adhesive products today are from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.  I'll have convenient shopping links below because I'm just a little bit of an enabler.  I don't deny it!  Those pretty, sparkly sequins are courtesy of Buttons Galore and their 28 Lilac Lane embellishment line.  These photos can't really capture the iridescent yumminess of those sparkling beauties.  You can find all of the gorgeous 28 Lilac Lane sequin collections, here.

Check out my video inspiration below but click the link to go visit the rest of the hop.  I'd appreciate a "like" and if you would, subscribe to my YT channel.  Growing a YouTube channel can painfully slow!  I appreciate your help so much.  Thank you!  Terri

Rescuing A Tossed Background With So Suzy Stamps

I'm here today, for So Suzy Stamps, sharing why you should never toss those experimental backgrounds that don't work out.  I'm sure you're like me; you try out some colors, some smooshing, a little this, a little that and you're just not happy with the way your coloring is going.  What do you do?  I can tell you what you shouldn't do, and that's toss it.  You would not believe how many times I've been "not too crazy" about my background and tossed it.  Big mistake!  You never know when inspiration will hit and the old light bulb will go off.  One day, I stopped tossing my backgrounds and started saving them.  Since that day, I have found numerous ways to re-purpose them, from creating fun die cut images, punching circles, or, as I'm doing today, bringing an old background back to life.

Would you believe that I actually intended for this background to be a sky?  I love to watercolor skies but on the day that I was creating this, I just wasn't feeling it, so I put it aside.  I had in mind to flip the Olesya Side Bloom to be more like a water lily and I thought it would also be fun to pull out this background and flip it to use as water for my bloom.  I think it worked out beautifully!

I don't have any photos of how my background was colored, since I've had it awhile, but I can explain briefly.  Grab some watercolor markers, such as Tombow dual brush, Marvy Le Plume or Zig Clean Color brushes, a waterbrush or small paintbrush and water, and watercolor paper.  I use Strathmore 300 series.  Swipe your marker on an acrylic block or craft mat.  Grab the color with a wet paintbrush or waterbrush and just start coloring (painting) random colors here and there.  I usually try to stick with 3-5 colors for a sky; blue, purple, red and/or orange and yellow.  It depends on if my sky will be day or night.  You can vary the intensity of color by using less water.  Let your colors run by tipping your paper.  Blot with a paper towel as needed.  Use your heat emboss tool to dry or dry overnight.

Now, for my blooms, it helps to have a Misti stamping tool, particularly for watercolor paper.  It has a thicker, bumpy texture, so you'll need several good stamps to get a good image.  The Misti allows you to position your stamp on a lid that makes a perfect stamped image every time.  By leaving it in the same position, you can stamp again until you achieve a darker, fuller inked image.

For my blooms I'm using:

Memento black archival ink
Misti stamping tool
Zig Clean color brushes in gray and two blues

To stamp your blooms, I was careful to use the black Memento ink only on the petals, and swiping my gray Zig Clean color brush on the lower portion that will be "below the water".  Can you see the difference?  I wanted it to appear more translucent below the water.  Both images were stamped twice with my Misti.

Next, I colored my blooms with a blue Zig clean color brush, diluting some of the color with a waterbrush and blotting with  a paper towel.

I also lightly colored those little bubble stamens below water with the same color of blue, again using the waterbrush and blotting with a paper towel.  I used the cornflower blue Zig brush to color at the base of the bloom for added depth.

Next, I stamped my sentiment 3 times with my Misti for full coverage.

Just for some added sparkle, I used my Fireworks spray to add some shine.  It gives a metallic sheen that is so pretty.  I just unscrewed the cap and swiped the tubing from the mister along the petals.

I also swiped some of my Fireworks tubing along the top of my card.  Layer and trim your design on designer paper and an A2 sized white card and you are done!  I used some pretty blue paper from an Echo Park Paper winter collection.  It doubles nicely for summer!

This would make a nice friendship card or even a sympathy card.  Remember, don't toss those backgrounds!  Be sure to visit the So Suzy Stamps blog for more inspiration from the design team.

Blooming with So Suzy Stamps

Wow, can you believe it's May 1st?  Where has the time gone?  One more month and my one and only will end his freshman year in high school.  Sigh.  I'll admit, I have been having crafty mojo issues.  After tossing three projects where I just wasn't feeling it, I finally decided to stick with just three colors for this card featuring So Suzy Stamps.   I pulled out an old favorite, "Fancy Butterfly", along with the new Olesya Bloom, Open Leaves and Simple Be You.  Be sure and stop by Suzy's blog today, as the entire design team is bringing you inspiration with the latest release, several of which are designed by our very own Olesya Kharkova.

I created my card, first, scaling down a 5" x 7" white Bazzill Card, and trimming a piece of woodgrain DCWV cardstock from my Vintage Collector papers, then running it through a WRMK woodgrain emboss folder with my Cuttlebug.

Next, I used my Spellbinders Celebration Rectangle pierced dies, cutting a blue and orange piece of DCWV Flip Cardstock paper, stacking them together and trimming them diagonally so I can use just one half of each color and piece them together.

To keep it simple, I chose just 3 colors; brown, orange and blue.  I was feeling the hippie and 70's vibe so I went with it.  I heat embossed all my images using Nuvo Hot Chocolate embossing powder.  Gosh, I love that color so much.  It's my absolute favorite right now.  You can find it here, in Suzy's store.
Next, I colored my embossed images with my Marvy Lettering Markers, blending with a waterbrush and blotting with a paper towel for a light effect.  Aren't they breathtaking?  I think so.

If you look up close on the floral centers, you'll see that they're popped up on foam.  I used a hole punch to pop them up.  All my adhesives are from Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.  I also shaped my flowers, not with a fancy shaping tool, but by folding the petals inward and using the tip of a sharpie marker, pressing along the inside of each petal, with a thick foam mat which allowed me to better mold and shape my flowers.  It helps to first lightly spritz the back of your paper flower with water.  After shaping is complete, dry with a heat emboss tool.

I also bought this pendant jewelry piece on clearance quite some time ago from Hobby Lobby.  I remembered that I had it and thought it would go perfectly with my color theme.  I hot glued it to the center of my handmade bow.  I'm so happy with how my card turned out.  These colors truly put me in a good mood!

Thanks so much for stopping in today.  Be sure and visit the blog for more design team inspiration today.
