Vellum Colored Lovebirds for So Suzy Stamps

Hello my lovelies.  It's the first of the month which means it's times for another round of inspiration from the So Suzy Stamps design team.  Today, I'm featuring the love birds stamp from our newest release and using the heat embossing and coloring on vellum technique.

You will need:

-A7 sized white card

-Designer paper of choice (DCWV)

-Artistic markers to match paper (Tombow)

-Misti stamping tool

-4" x 4" piece of vellum

-Versamark Clear ink

- White embossing Powder (Ranger)

- embossing buddy or dryer sheet

-tape

-Oval nesting stitched die (Lil Inker Designs) and die cutter (Cuttlebug)

- embellishments (button, ribbon, string)

-adhesive runner 

-hot glue and glue gun

-waterbrush or small paintbrush and water

-paper towel

-trimmer

To begin, you will want to prepare the surface of your vellum for heat embossing, to prevent splotchy powder and to have a good, clean emboss.  An embossing buddy is great to have.  It's a pouch with a powder inside and you simply rub it across your surface and blow off the fine powder.

You can also use a dryer sheet which is what I'm doing today.  

1.  Swipe your dryer sheet across your vellum.  

2. Tape your vellum to your Misti stamping plate.

(Clear Versamark ink is sticky and it will make your vellum raise up, even with the Misti magnets in place.)

3. Stamp your love birds twice with the Misti and Versamark Ink, then add your embossing powder, tapping off excess and heating with your heat tool.  

See what a nice image you have?  The dryer sheet makes all the difference and prevents speckles of powder from forming everywhere.  

4.  Use the largest nesting oval die that you have to create an oval frame.  I chose two coordinating DCWV papers from The Chateau Lavendar stack. 

5.  Use the 2nd largest nesting die to cut out an oval shape from the front of your white card.  You will adhere your vellum lovebird behind the card after coloring.  I did scale down my A7 card and layered paper with a trimmer, approximately 1/2-3/4" to achieve more appropriate visual appeal with my die cut oval shape.

6.  I chose 4 different Tombow dual brush markers that coordinated with my paper, to color my love birds and around the swirly tails.  Use a waterbrush to blend and blot with a paper towel to achieve the watercolor effect.

7. Use an adhesive runner to adhere your vellum display to the inside of your card front.  Adhere your die cut frame on top of the oval cut out of your card.  Embellish as desired.  I always use a hot glue gun for my buttons and ribbon, particularly for mailing, to ensure they do not fall off.

Glittery Snowflakes for So Suzy Stamps

I've got another project for you that features So Suzy Stamps.  Today, it's all about the snowflakes.  I'm working with two of Suzy's stamps, "Snowflake Trio" and "No Midnight".

First, trim a piece of 4" x 6" watercolor paper.  I use Bristol Strathmore 300 series.  Grab your Snowflake trio and stamp in Versamark clear ink in the pattern that I used above, or one of your own.  I stamped a couple clusters, then masked and stamped individual snowflakes in a cascading pattern.  Sprinkle with Nuvo Shimmering Pearl Embossing powder, tap off the excess and heat with an embossing heat tool.

Now, for the fun part.  Coloring and blending.  Grab your watercolor pencils and a water brush.  If you don't have any, it's time to go shopping!  I used just a couple blues and purples, coloring randomly then blending the colors with my water brush.  

You can see below, how the waterbrush blends and moves the color around.  I love this technique.  It's so easy, yet yields fantastic results almost every time.  Ignore the embossed sentiment.  Originally I was going to use white but it disappeared into the background, so I opted to instead emboss on vellum.  Allow to dry, then use a baby wipe or wet paper towel to wipe across your embossed snowflakes to remove the watercolors.  If you're too impatient, to let it dry, (yes, sometimes that's me....) you can use a heat embossing tool to quickly dry.  If it buckles or warps your paper, grab your iron and some parchment paper.  Place your painted image facedown, between the parchment paper, and iron your image.  This will straighten out any warping.  Take care not to iron too long, so you don't damage or burn your watercolor paper.

I used my Nuvo Silver glitter Moondust crystal drops and just added tiny drops on the center of some of the snowflakes.  I heat embossed my sentiment on a torn strip of vellum, adding  more individual embossed snowflakes, then popping everything up on foam squares, placed under the snowflakes, so as not to show through the vellum.  If you zoom in, you'll see some fringed silver ribbon peeking out from under the vellum as well.

Measure layered purple cardstock and trim your watercolored paper so that they line up appropriately on an A2 sized white card.

Argyle Easter Eggs with Two Paper Divas

 There's a whole lot going on over at Two Paper Divas Stamps,  but let me start by sharing this project that features one of the new March Releases, "It's All About the Egg".  I believe there's around 10 new stamp sets that were recently released.  That's incredible!  Melissa and Gayla are busy bees and designing some fabulous products that I am more than happy to play with and share! 

There are 6 different eggs in this stamp set and today I have chosen to highlight this pretty argyle or harlequin style egg.  I started by creating my own background on watercolor paper, using 3 different TH distress ink sprays and spritzing with water on watercolor paper.  When dry, I took a paper towel, scrunched it up and dabbed it into white pigment ink, then dabbed it all over my card.  Next, I used a TCW stencil and sponged on Powder Puff chalk ink.  Kind of makes me think of bunny tails! 

To stamp my eggs, I first stamped in a lavender ink, then re-stamped over my same image with white pigment ink.  I added some diamond Stickles glitter glue as well.  The finishing touches were the sentiment, also from TPD, called "Wishing You a Happy Easter", heat embossed onto vellum with white pigment ink and clear embossing powder.  A pretty ombre bow from The Ribbon Resource rounds out this card.

Christmas Card Hop with The Ribbon Resource

Happy Friday!  Each Friday until Christmas, you'll find Christmas inspiration from the Prima Ribbonista's at the The Ribbon Resource - May Arts Ribbon Retail Store .  Today, we're featuring Christmas cards on the blog and you'll also have a chance to win a prize. 

I finally got my hands on the paper collection, "A Christmas Carol" from Graphic 45.  I love these beautiful papers and I couldn't wait to pair them with some pretty ribbons from The Ribbon Resource.

To begin, I cut some of the Graphic 45 papers with Spellbinders dies.  You'll find a full supply list at the end of this post.

Next, I did a some background paper piecing.  All my adhesives today are from Xyron.

I fussy cut some images and popped them out with foam squares, embellished with my ribbon and added some glitter glue.

My ribbon focus on the lower left corner includes burlap string that's triple looped in a figure eight and secured with an adhesive dot in the center; a tiny gold metallic bow, and burlap stitched ribbon that is threaded through the ends of my die-cut sentiment frame.  I also mounted my Scrooge and Tiny Tim image on vellum to keep my detailed die cut edges from blending into the background.  This also allowed me to pop it up on foam squares and add some glitter glue around the border.

Week 2 - DoubleClick Skittles Monster/Robot Challenge

Challenge #30 - Use a Monster or Robot

For this Skittles challenge, I wanted to pair R2D2, the fabulous and charming robot from Star Wars, with a sentiment from a stamp kit that I needed to break in.  I've used my Cricut Explore, once again, and uploaded a jpeg image of R2D2 into the online Design Space for the Explore.  I LOVE this feature!  My printer, prints the image with L-shaped markers, then I load my printed image onto a mat and the Explore scans the markers and perfectly cuts the outline of my image.  It's fabulous!

I had this really terrific starry night sky paper that was the perfect backdrop, along with some buttons that were also "out of this world".  I stamped my sentiment on vellum and added some twine, then scattered my Yellow Sunshine and Sailboat Blue Skittles across the sky and placed some Slate Skittles below my sentiment.

I love how this fun card turned out and my Skittles look fabulous, don't you think?  They are so much fun to play with and add such character and playfulness to your craft projects.  Grab some today!

Watercolored Beauty Featuring Adornit Art Play Paintables and The Ribbon Resource

Here's a beautiful piece that I've colored up featuring the ADORNit Art Play Paintables.  These are some of my absolute favorite products to color.  This piece is drawn by artist Lindsay Ostrom and is from the Be Awesome Collection.

Oversized Vellum Sleeve for Cards & More

I recently found myself in somewhat of a dilemma.  I made a really cute, really LARGE card.  The envelope that I thought it would fit in, didn't.  What to do?

Make an oversized sleeve!  Ding, ding, ding!  I decided to wing it (like I always do) and see what I could come up with.  It was a lot easier than I thought, so I thought I'd share this technique with you.  You can make this plain if you like, although, I chose to emboss it using my Cuttlebug.

You can really make this as large or as small as you'd like.  I'll give you my dimensions for making a sleeve to fit a card that was just over 6"x6".  My sleeve was approximately 7"x7".

You need:

- A trimmer/scorer such as the We R Memory Keepers TRIM AND SCORE Board 71337-1  

2 sheets of Bazzill 40 LB VELLUM 8.5 x 11 White 25 Sheets 

Scor-Tape 1/4 Inch Crafting Tape 

*embellishing tools, optional

Cuttlebug Die-Cut & Emboss Machine Provo Craft 2000293

First, trim your vellum sheets down to 8.5"x8.5".  I didn't go quite this large but I wish I had as it was a tight fit for my card.  Next time, I'll know better.

I used a 5"x7" embossing folder and scored both sides of my vellum to be able to fold the edges over the top of the embossing plates.  To fully emboss the vellum, I chose a design that could easily be turned upside down to finish embossing the bottom section, as my vellum was longer than the 7" folder.

 

Now, you're going to want to flip both sections of vellum over so the scored edges are facing down.  Add your Scor-tape to the outer side edges and bottom of one sheet of vellum. 

Now, add the second sheet of vellum by adhering to your taped sheet, to form this pouch or sleeve.

If your edges are uneven, simply trim with scissors.

Isn't it beautiful?  It's just what I need for this large card, plus it makes a lovely decorative presentation for the card and can be upcyled and used again.

Make several to have on hand for future projects.  I trimmed and scored both pieces of vellum at once, to save on time.  I can think of so many ways to utilize this sleeve; a gift set of smaller cards, thematic items such as teacher supplies, or crafting supplies for your crafty friends.  So many options.

Christmas Log Cabin with Jenn Shurkus

Jenn Shurkus Log Cabin

I didn't have any small cabin stamps or houses that were suitable, so I chose this larger house from an Avocado Arts set called Gingerbread Goodness.  Yes, it's really the base for a Gingerbread House!

I started with
We R Memory Keepers - Shine Collection - 12 x 12 Paper Pad - $9.34

 I trimmed and scored a 5"x5.75" card and a coordinating piece of trim from the Shine pad, using my WRMK trimmer/scorer.  The house was colored on white American Crafts cardstock with Tombow Dual brush pens.  Ranger Glossy Accents and Doodlebug Designs Glitter make the roof sparkle and lots of Rangers Stickles glitter glue for little twinkling lights and also for the door and snow.

I used a Marvy Snow Marker for the snow and then once it was heated and puffed up, painted it with Ranger Picket Fence dabber and covered with Stickles White Lace glitter glue.  May Arts Ribbon red/white 2mm bakers twine finishes off this sweet card.
